Hi
I had the unfortunate experience of being double flashed by a gatso yesterday morning. However I was travelling towards the camera on the other side of the road to the white line markings. After talking to some friends yesterday afternoon it turns out two of them have been had by the same camera in the last week again travelling towards the camera on the other side of the road. My question is this: Has anybody else had this experience? Does it count as the camera is meant to be triggered by a vehicle moving away from it? Will the speed measurement be valid as I wasn't on the same side of the road as the markings? Any advice would be apprieciated so I know whether to prepare myself for the dreaded letter dropping on my doormat.
Cheers

Hi Toby,
No need to worry, you definitely won't be getting a letter :)
The camera's do that when they have a dummy unit inside that isn't taking pictures. It still reacts to the speed and also gets triggered by cars on the other side of the road, as you were.

Im sure JV is right in this case.....but round bedfordshire, and Kent...they are using new cameras which face towards you...(smile)...I know of two people caught with these...they do exist!...
fine if your on a bike though 8)

Now i'm sure I read somewhere that taking a picture of the vehicle from a Gatso from the front cannot be used as evidence.
Thats why they turn em around.
I read a long time ago its something to do with privacy and a degree of saftey also.
Imagine sitting by the side of the road flashing your camera in drivers faces - wonder how long it would take Plod to turn up? Same goes for Gatso...
Plus there is the question of the person sitting next to you and a whole complex legal/liberty matter/argument that I can't quite remember.
Anyway, i've had many pictures of the front of my car, and I've concluded its the back that matters.

Cheers modulater, very useful website. It seems that gatsos are quite often triggered by vehicles travelling in the opposite direction but as they aren't designed to operate in that manner prosecution is extremely unlikely. I'll breathe a sigh of relief and remember the camera is there in future.

If they are triggered by vehicles going in the wrong direction it is because they are a dummy unit and will not be taking pictures. They can however, be changed at any time for a functioning unit, so just because you have seen it taking 'dummy' shots one day doesn't mean it will always be like that :)

Rip them all down :D

I'm sure I heard something the other day about a group of vigilantes going round vandalizing them throughout the country........wish they had done that one in Sunningdale that got me a few weeks back. >:(
-
When i was on holiday a few weeks back in Norfolk, i saw one with its head cut off! ;D
-
One on the A3 at New Malden was reversed into a year or so ago. They chopped it down and its never been seen since, although the road markings have been back for several months.

I think its M.A.D. , Motorists Against Detection who are responsible for the vandalism.
-
;D wud be quite satisfying to see a pic of that one.. irony n' all that.
-
Yep i agree. These people are awful :D
-
I would even report them to the Police if i had a chance.
NOT.

Absolutely! mindless vandals ;D

Some guy down my way got flashed he went back that night and cut the top off of it. About a month later the stupid prat was boasting about it down the pub and an off duty policeman heard him, they busted him for criminal damage and speeding after they found it in his garage.

Should have given him a medal ;)

A tin of underseal sprayed on the lense perhhaps or even better a tin of expanding foam let of inside the camera, Not that I want you all to do it you understand.

Hi!
Not even sure if us read or like the mag that is max power or the likes of it but they hav had a few pics in of gatso's getting destoyed n dressed up, quite funny really(not that i'd do it mind cos it's illegal, but quite fun to look at, ha ha!).U also hav to watch out for the gatso's that can actually turn around, obviously not every two secs but like every hour or something so that they can get both sides of the road, just to fool u-the twits >:(!
Also heard that if u get a letter, if u send it back without ur signature, there is a loophole in the sysytem which allows u not to get prosecuted cos u haven't signed that it was u driving :)! anyone else heard of that?
Dinky :-*
