can anyone tell me where i can get hold of a flywheel locking tool for a 97 golf 8v gti. thanks

i 'think' the fantastic mr rubjonny has a way around this... not 100% but it is worth asking

put a 12point 19mm socket on the crank bolt and hold engine still with a breaker bar, or do this:

It easy enough to adapt a piece of metal strip to do the same thing.
Did it years ago on a mk2 16v.

Is that what you are left with when the gearbox is taken off ? If so it looks pretty simple to change a flywheel ( lightened).

just done mine today on a mk4 i used a balljoint splitter fork ! sounds mad but worked a treat just wedged it in the teeth of the  dual mass flywheel and to the floor and that locked it off  ! the spline bolts are mega tight tho !
