Title: Need some advice
Post by: rakesh27 on 17 April 2011, 21:39
Guys,

Ive been a regular member of the mrkIV forum, however my weekend did not go well. You see i own a W plate Gof GTi-Turbo full modified really nice and tasteful, until some wayne kerr driving too fast hits the front drivers wing and now the cars a write off (as insurance says).

I actually miss her, she was really good to me and very fast esp after the stage 1 and all the bits very nice car, well as you know nothing lasts forever and im in the market for another car, but this time i will get mrk5

Im considering the following either

1) 3dr 2.0 GTi-Turbo if possible ltd30

2) 3dr 3.2 R32

Def want leathers and all the extras this time.

I need some advice this car im looking to get is used for normally going to and from work which is around 25miles each way through north to south london via normal main roads no motorways.

What im looking from the 2 i suggested is got to be very quick from 0, have some grunt, basically a very hot hatch that can easily keep up with the big boys, fuel consumption would be usefull as you know bloody petrol prices.

I will do some modifying alittle later eg, lowered, rims, lights, air filter, remap, clutch, exhuast, tints etc.

Could you please tell me which of the 2 i suggested would be best for me and by the way cant wait to get one, thanks all

Get an ED30, more tuning potential than a GTI and a lot lot more than the R32 unless you supercharge/turbocharge it. As for petrol the V6 noise will make you put your foot down giving your ears a handjob, meanwhile your wallet is being robbed. Tax is another thing to consider.

if you read reviews the R32 is not much quicker than GTI
the only plus point being the 4motion system and V6 sound

I had considered that route for where we live in winter but £400+ road tax put me off

Gti is a better all rounder. ED30 one to have but we couldn't find one in our price range
so ended up with a 200ps fully loaded

Thanks guys.

I think ill give the R32 a miss, i just relised the R32 does 250bhp and the GTi-E30 does 240bhp, now when i thought about it the R32 is a heaver engine car including all the bits as it has 4 wheel drive more things to go wrong and fuel consumption is crap esp when you plant your foot.

When i checked out the std GTi 200bhp and def the E30 250bhp the performance to ration should be much better then the R32 esp with the E30.

Thanks for the advice im def gonna try and get the E30, i badly miss my Mrk IV Golf Turbo. Its hitting home as present im driving my sisters Polo utterly useless in performance i suppose its very economical, thanks for your help.

Is there anything i should look for when getting a E30 or GTi

Thanks

If you look in the technical section of the MKV section you'll find a thread all about buying a MKV GTI/ED30

Personally I'd go for the ED30 with DSG.

Try DSG if you haven't already. Just try to find one with a decent spec & service history. Hurdy knows a thing or two about the ED30 if you want to modify.

Here's the link for issues to look for on a MKV (not just new as in the title)

Buy any Mk5 GTI.  They are all much better than a Nissan 1.5 Qashqai.
And they can be easily remapped (unlike the latest Mk6's )

Guys

When you say DSG is that when you have a automatic with paddle shift behind steering wheel, im not exactly sure.

Dual Sequential Gearbox = semi auto box without a torque converter. Doesn't lose power between gear changes and uses the gearstick or flappy paddles

Guys,

Could you please answer

1) Should i get 3dr - 5dr - which is better for sportier drive
2) Does the GTi feel really nippy and grunty as i had a remap Mrk4 which was awesome very quick
3) The new stereo layout does it accept a subwoofer will built in amp
4) Should i get the edition 30 if possible
5) Are the GTI easy to modify, remap, coilies, exhaust, whats the best size rims etc
6) Std exhaust does it sound grunty or silent
7) If lowering will i have to replace anti roll bar at front due to drive shaft rubbing
8) Is the std suspension stiff for driving quick or wallowie for crap drive
9) Anything i should know.

I have many options on what i can get, but im favouring the GTi, Edt30 or maybe R32

1. we bought 5 door due to family plans so it's persoanl taste -besides easier access is quite handy when carrying big stuff
2. In std form they are not bad but with remap very responsive (stage 1 will give you approx 250bhp on 200ps engine and 300bhp on ED30)
3. Don't know about ICE stuff - Have OEM system which is good enough
4. ED30's have more potential for tuning ...again personal taste
5. There are many tuning options depends whether you like subtle and tastsful or cras
6. STD exhaust has a nice throaty sound when pushed and quiet when crusing
7. The std suspension is really well set up as it's fully independant unlike the mk4 with decent tyres handling is good.

Brakes are decent. Drive is good. Few squeaks and rattles but even BMW have them.
Look out for full dealer history and corrosion on front arches as already mentioned.

ED30 has a detuned S3 engine hence the bigger gains from tuning - 200ps has smaller turbo & different injectors

Depends how low your going to go  on coilovers you should be fine without going really low and you may possibly need to remove a screw out of the front wheel arch liners as they get rubbing but apart from that that's it. Everything else is just down to how far you want to go to make it like handle like a race car  both gti and ed30 both identical apart from ed30 haveing slightly stronger engine internals and a slightly bigger turbo and injectors. That's the main reason for power difference. Gti revo stage 2+ 290 bhp if your lucky and ed revo stage 2 + 350 ish depending on what rolling road you go on. You need to spend a few days searching through this forum and a endless amount of info on mk5golfgti forum !!!

1) Number of doors wont effect the drive, its just the 3dr looks better than the 5dr
2) Its plenty quick, lots of grunt and turbo kicks in smoothly and quite early.
3) Dont think theres any probs with sub and amp.
4) ED30 is bit quicker, but does suffer from turbo lag apparently. More so than the Gti.
5) Easy to modify I think, 17" rims are best for handling, but bigger rims look better obviously.
6) Standard exhaust has a gd. grunty sound.
7) Shouldnt have any probs. lowering.
8) Standard suspension is stiff enough for quick driving imo.
9) Check the oil at least every month!

Go for a Gti or ED30.  R32 isn't worth the extra money.  With the R32 all your paying for is a nice engine sound, its only a tiny bit quicker, is heavier and eats petrol.

Guys,

Thanks for the comments, ive got an idea on what i want and what i want to do bit by bit.

Are you all saying that from the start ill be able wire in my basetube which has a built in amp to the std cd/stereo witin the golf. I thought you couldnt add stuff like that to the std stereo systems since they do not have the connections.

Basically does the std stereo in the GTi-s allow a connection from the sub eg phono wires and remote sub on/off connection, i dont think it will.

If i need to take the original stereo out and obvoisly put in a bracket to allow a nice Pioneer i will loose connection to the steering wheel is this correct, also has anyone fitted aftermarket stereo to the GTI does it look ugly with adapter. I ask in the Mrk IV i got it blending in really nice with my instruments and dash layout.

Thats one of the things i hat with new cars, the stupid car stereo changed in size, tossers.

The sound system in Mk5's is way below par.  This along with a non flat loading bay and a weedy reversing light are my main gripes about the mk5.
