Title: F.A.O RICHANDHAZEL/TINMAN
Post by: 15 inches on 07 September 2003, 21:06
I posted on here about my fuel prob' a few weeks ago,and got some welcome tips but it still haunts me .Basicly my mk2 gti jerks when coming on and off the accelorator. It is worse the lower the gear, ive been round the houses and replaced nearly every thing-but the problem remains.Where is the control unit? I thought it was the 1 under the flimsy plastic cover on the left hand side of the bulk head.I saw the post  suggesting that there is one behind the centre consol.
Is this the 1 that controls the idle speed valve?
I can try this as a last resort!!!

The control box for the idle speed control valve is behind the centre console. What have you replaced so far?

Hmmm, not sure if this will be of any help to you but here is a troubleshooting guide for the digifant fuel system:-

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richandhazel1/DigifantOBD/Troubleshooting/ESIS.htm

I've really been busy today had to rescue a mate who's Rover 420 SLi broke down on him and then fixed a problem on another mates 1.6 Golf. Haven't really had a chance to look into this for you, but hopefully can dig something out for you tomorrow.  :(

Did you try testing the fuel mixture?

There are a series of electrical tests that you can do at the Difigant and ignition control unit connectors that will test the various components in your system.
Would you like me to dig out the procedure and table?

Finally sorted it........spent most of the day re-vamping my website. So time consuming especially when you are a complete novice as I am.
Anyway, here is the info. I think it should be straight forward enough:-

Let me know if there is any problems with pictures or tables not coming up or the webpage not working correctly......I'm fairly certain its OK, but I've said that before.  >:(

Good luck.

Thanks for that, ill get my testing equipment out for that, weekend.

ps-what does continuaty mean ??? ???

thanks again

Continuity means you have a circuit i.e zero resistance.
No continuity means open circuit i.e very high resistance

Those electrical tests are something I have never done before, only came across them recently so take great care and what ever you do, make sure you disconnect both the ignition control unit and the digifant control unit (with the ignition switched off)......you only want to stick the test equipment on the connectors to the modules, not the modules themselves, much damage and expense could be incurred if you get that wrong.

Did you try golfvr6's suggestions? i.e checking your fuel mixture?

Try the spark plug tester as i've suggested in previous threads.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in replying, a very bad week at work.

The thing in the cabin wouldn't be the problem. It only deals with the engine when it is cold and the throttle is in the idle position. There is a tiny dip switch in the throttle body that tells the ecu when the engine should be at idle. It probably also trips the idle control stabilisation unit as well.

Its not that.

It could be the crystal doobry whatsit (richandhazel will tell you its real name), which can be found under the drivers wiper. But i would doubt it from what you've said. To test - find a mate with a GTI and try his.

I can ask around, but could you describe a bit more what happens.

Cheers,
Tin

The spark plug tester is a see-through spark plug that you can see the colour of the combustion burn through it. Quite cheap and very useful, Gunson Colortune, you can buy it from Halfords.
