Title: New to the forum - have my mk5 gti from today
Post by: samhain1 on 15 April 2011, 00:10
Hi folks,

Pleased to be here, collected my 2006 gti and am really enjoying it. I have one slight problem though.

There is an interior smell, I must admit it was there when I purchased it but I put it down to lack of use. Anyway driving home today (70) miles the smell just didn't go away. How can I describe the smell. Kind of like sweet smell, bit sickly, I did think that maybe milk had been spilled in the past but when I got home I put my nose on every seat (brave I know) and nothing, the carpets were dry and did not smell of ....well anything. The smell is there regardless of whether the engine is on or not.

I had a feeling that the pollen filter would be needing replaced and sure enough when I took it out it was full of debris and was completely black. I had another one from my old mk5 golf which was only a month old or so and that is in it's place. The smell is still there (didn't think it would just magical disappear!!) so I like a car to have no smell if that makes sense, this might really annoy me.

My thoughts have turned to the ac condenser and the drain pipe....any thoughts ??

If the drain pipe was blocked what would that mean? Where would the overflow water go?

I think the car has sat at the garage for a wee while, might it get better by itself being used? Should I just take it somewhere and get the bacteria killed? I have tried a bomb in another car in the past and to be honest didn't think much of it.

What else could it be do u think?

Many thanks

Stu

get the AC cleaned.  I did it to a second hand car I brought once, and my mate at a main dealer gave me this can of AC cleaner.

this sounds mad, you had to cover the interior headlining of the car with plastic sheeting (as it was a bit sitcky and would cling to the headlinging otherwise), have the car running with ac on, and lift the boot and spray this stuff in, it was then taken into the ac system and was meant to kill an odours and it worked.

- maybe this is the 'bomb' to which you refer?

i would tend to agree that the wet dog type smell
is air con related

have you tried running heating up on high for a while with air con off?

Hi There

I'm new to the forum also, so hello to everyone.

I got my 2007 gti a few months ago and also experienced a nasty smell but only when the air conditioning was on. After some research I decided to clean the system with this -1z einszett Air Conditioning Cleaner : http://www.einszett.co.uk/Klima-Cleaner.php (http://www.einszett.co.uk/Klima-Cleaner.php)

It doesn't work like a 'bomb' you just squirt the whole can into the air vents in one go, no mess. It worked a treat, no smell at all afterwards! I also changed the cabin/pollen filter.

I think for £11 it's worth a try.

Andy

Hi and welcome

Keep running the air con and see if it helps if not maybe it is damp inside.

Cheers for that folks, disinfected the interior and chained the pollen filter and also put a ac bomb through the system, seems alot better, but will keep an eye
