hi, i am looking at fitting a new engine in to me mk1 but to be honest i am not sure what route to go down as i am quite new to the vw scene and the fact that there are so many engines that will go in to my golf i am a little lost! i dont want to do the work my self as i dont think i have the know how! can anybody tell what i can get for about 1500 fitted, i know its not a great deal but its me budget! am i better going for a tuned 8v or a 16v? :undecided:

I'm no expert but you should be able to get a fairly decently tuned 2.0 in there for that sort of money.

But this months Golf+ mag, there's a feature in there about what you can put in your golf and an estimated price for each conversion. I'm thinking that a 16V is probably your max for that money and you maybe be able to slip in a 2.0 bottom end in for that cash but I think that's about it.? :undecided:
PM Martz on here I think he's had a load of work done on his mk2 and it was about in your budget too.?
One of Martz's threads here about his mod -----> http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=17946.0

you could buy any of the VW engines (apart from the FSI's) for ?1500 easily. it's fitting them that's the trouble. a 16v would go nicely in there or more adventurous a G60.

yeah i would love a g60 but i dont feel confident enough to fit an engine my self, unless its a straight swop! i have seen a place that does a bored out 1.8 8v with fast cam and gas flowed head for 1500 but i not sure how much more power it would have to mine! i dont really care about top speed, i just want a car that gets to 100 quickly!!

take everything out of it apart from a carbon fibre drivers seat and that'll give you a few seconds!!!
-
good idea!
not sure me bird will be too keen!!!
not getting any ice in the car mind!
-
^^ why? you got the heaters on full? ha ha ice geddit? i'll get me coat...
seriously though, a light car will make alot of difference. and a 16 valve conversion is a pretty common one in a mk1 nowadays so shouldn't be too hard to find someone who'll do it for you.

a g60 will push your buget bit ive driven a mk1 g60 and it was great fun
but a 2.0 16v would be the best way to go.

I agree with Velly, 2.0L 16V would be fantastic
