Not really, 17"s are too big for a mk1.

I have had all sizes on a mark 1, 13,14,15,16 and 17. I am currently on 16" ultrasleggrs which I think look spot on, you can get a lowish ride height and stilll fit big front brakes. I still like 15" but struggle for brake clearance.

with those 16s it looks like he's got 40 profile tyres or 35s, you are gonna have one harsh ride with those, honestly mate max is 15. i have 15s wiv 45 profile and combined with the konis is bang n crash everywhere.

They are 205/40 I know what you mean about the ride, mine is running 45lb springs fron and 550lb at the rear. Fortunately it wont be a daily driver. I also hope it will sit a bit lower when the rest of the bits are on it although with this wheel and tyre combo, it has full suspension travel at the rear with no rubbing.
Back in early 90's i had 15"bbs with 195/45 and that was a good compromise for looks and handling but you are restricted a bit with brake size. This now has 315mm front and 300mm rears.

15" with 195/50's is the best all round choice for a mk1

195/45 at a stretch.

That's what I'm running and an easy tyre to find at sensible prices too.

I prefer the look of a 45 profile.
I recently bought a set of Nankangs for £125 for 4 in 195/45/15 and for a cheap brand, handle really well.
