after talking to a couple members i fort i'd post the photos from the fitting of my new steering wheel
so hear goes
to start off

undo the two bolts in the back of the mk3 wkeel

remember to dis connect the battery to you dont get a air bag in your face lol
unplug n remove air bag and you should be faced with this

remove the warning plate and unplug the horn and undo these three srews

the big nut holding the wheel on is a 24mm so make sure you've got a socket big enough
now the moddin starts
the three bits where the three srews you've just taken out fit into the mk3 wheel but not the mk4 wheel so what i did was drill out the back of the mk4 wheel holes so that the three bits sit in the wheel

the mk4 holes are a couple mms out so i put the mk4 on the spline, had a look how far out and then drilled the holes out so the srews would fit

once youve got all three srews in (i've only got two in and its all workin fine) put the big bolt back on(with the washer from the mk3 three wheel) and do up

do up and then turn the whell if it feels to tights then remove the wheel addrill the holes out further untill it feels right
the mk4 horn has a brown wire and a black wire and the mk3 only has a black wire. on the mk4 wheel you only need the brown one so remove the black one and then join the brown wire the the black wire from the car

then once oyu are happy that it feels smooth to turn and the horn workins then you can put the air bag in and admire

warning! if it feels too tight to turn do not drive it, mine was at first and fort it'l be okay jus to drive down the road, it wasnt and i brokthe the connection for the airbag, i hope that you learn from my mistake.
this is just what i done and is not a guide, mod at your own risk.

looks alright that! with regard the airbag does the mk4 connectors fit the mk3 receiver on the column side then or did you swap the whole airbag unit?

did you reconnect the airbag? and did it show any fault codes/lights for the bag after fitting (It's an mot fail soon!)

yep as far as I know all non working warning lights will be a mot failure soon.....

So would this mean that for all those that have fitte aftermarket non-airbag steering wheels they'd also need to retro fit a non-airbag / ABS warning light panel on the dash from a lower model?

or fit a resistor (which should be supplied with the boss kit..I know momo include them)

But that would still leave an airbag light on the dash, does the resistor stop it lighting or just let the airbag ecu do it's initial checks then switch off the light as if there was an airbag still fitted?

a resistor lights the bulb and then turns it off like normal

Ok. Personally i wouldn't want a pointless light flashing on and off every time i started my car and would change the warning light panel but I guess most people wouldn't worry about it as long as it passed the MOT. Im just fussy like that though. :smiley:

my airbag lights been on for about a year now, no idea why it just randomly came on one day and I never got round to finding out why :P Guess I better investigate

if thats the case surely you could simply take the bulb out the clocks for the airbg warning light and mr mot tester would never know!

yep as far as I know all non working warning lights will be a mot failure soon.....
as well as a whole bunch of stuff which will affect modded cars......................

yh the air bag just plugs straight into the connector on the car

this red connetor is the airbag connector and just gose straight thru the mk4 wheel and into the airbag. the mk3 and mk4 airbag connectors are the same
after i pluged the mk4 airbag in, i turned the engine on and the airbag light came on and then went off as normal

So all you need is the wheel and airbag, nice mod!

seems like alot of messin about in my opinion for a wheel that dont look any better than a mk3's...u would have been better off doing the mod on a mk5 wheel with radio controls

Mk4 wheel suits mk3 perfect

My wheel needs changing as its gone all soft in places, trying to find a good Mk3 wheel is harder than fitting a Mk4 wheel, this is why I will be changing mine for one :smiley:
and its quite nice :cool:

Tweed and i had a huge disscussion about the airbag system and the MOT. Sure it came to the conclusion that i thought a resistor and no light would work but i was wrong and if your airbag was origonally fitted at factory its got to be there at test .

but how would that work if you have an after market steering wheel without airbag, if the light doesnt come on then theres no way of them knowing that the car came with an air bag surely?
thanks for the info though on the mod, going to use this to fit an audi RS TT/R8 steering wheel in the next few weeks.

hopefully il have the wheel by the end of april and fitted by then.
found out the new style TT have the same spline size as the older shape ones and the old ones fit a mk4 golf fine, so will just have to drill out the hole (pains me to say il have to drill out an R8 steering wheel! hah)

I just did this and now my horn keeps sounding when I turn the wheel or put pressure on it, I have disconnected it for now but can't figure out what is setting it off....I have connected the black car wire straight to the brown wire as it says

Is the horn wires crossing over any of the metal inside the wheel? If so Itl be earthing and then setting it off..?

It does but none of the wire strands are exposed. It only seems to happen if The wheel turns to a certain point or if the wheel is pushed
