is it possible to change the crankshafts because my bottom end shells r making noises and some1 has told me u can change the crank aswell as the shells and some1 else says u carnt lol neeeeeeeed help lol G reg 18. 16v
-
The engine will need to come out to replace the crank.
You would be better to remove it, strip it down and see what is wrong.
-
as above find the casue first then work from there. but yeah, 16v crank is same as 1.8 8v one from carb and gti
-
thanks ppl going to get it stripped
-
Good work lad, start a thread on it
-
why change cranck if you catch it in time just polish up the journals and fit new shells, if it's worn to much or the suface is to badly damaged for that just have it ground to 1st undersize and get 1st undersize shells
-
Danny what does 1st undersize mean ??

Edit see below

Danny what does 1st undersize mean ??
there are usally 3 options for bearing size when buying them othen marked "std " to indicate they are standard size then there is " -.010 " or "-0.10 " for 1st undersize and "-0.020" or "-0.20" for 2nd undersize.
wayne - as metal will have been removed from the cranck if it has had to be reground hence reducing the diamiter of the bearing journal slightly hence new bearings can be bought in smaller sizes. not larger ones it's pistons that come oversize as metal is removed from the inside of the bore and increases it's diamiter tho often not the case on more modern engines as you'll overbore by anything fro 60 - 300 thou and pres liners in and use std size pistons
often you can just polish the jounals up with a bit or rope over some 2000 grit wet and dry and spinning it around for a bit and chuck std shells back in
-
i think it will b easyer because some sh!theads didnt do the job right the 1st time it got done it has already a reegrind they didnt take the engine out did it on ramps and it wasnt done properly still made a little noise wen got it back so its going to b a totaly strip job and hopefully it will b ready 4 the summer lol just going to take my time :-)
-
they won't have reground the cranck if they did it on a ramp. cranck needs to come out the engine for a regrind if it's ate another set of sheels quickly it prably beacuse they didn't clean the journals up before fitting the shells or they did clean them up but didn't bother to check them for size and fitted new shells to overly work journals so it probaly needed to come out for a regrind or you can replace the cranck tho you may need to have the replacement cranck ground.
if you get stuck for a cranck drop me a PM have a load of them somewhere
-
cheers 4 your help ppl the work begins monday stripped cleaned and new crank ;-) if i get stuck will drop u a txt hahhahaahhaah lol thanks again ppl

How the hell do you fit shells wrong

And you worked at tsr?? Shells have to go in a certain way round for oil to get in, and the notch has to be in the right place to stop them turning. Unless you're being sarcastic of course....
-
or you can put them in upside down as in plain shell in the block and the with with the oil hole in the bearing cap.
seen that done before

I was, I know it can be done and have seen it done, just wondered how a garage could get it wrong.

Just cause something's idiot-proof doesn't mean it's cnut-proof
