Just walked up to the car, pressed the fob to unlock the car and found it already open. Not sure how or why. Either me being forgetful, or possibly one of the kids, or maybe something more sinsister (?). No reaction re lock/unlock from the car whatsoever on pressing anything on the fob. Key in the ignition and the same story - no sign of any live anywhere. Checked the usual fuses and battery but all seems fine. Just thought that I'd check with the forum for any ideas on what to check /do next before I call the garage and unleash the fury that will prove clueless (remember that I live in Qatar). My thanks in advance; all ideas welcome at this point.

Do you have a volt meter to check if the battery is kicking out any power?
I assume the instrument panel doesn't kick into life when you turn the ignition?
By the sounds of it I'd say the battery is kaput :undecided:

Indeed, all instruments dead. As I was looking for the multimeter the transporter came. Just waiting for the phone call and the prognosis now.

Worrying times Mr Pretty Red Bird, hopefully it's just a silly little electrical gremlin.
What are Qatari VW dealers like?

In the past I have had to call out VW for the same reason.
They had to reset the immobiliser. I put my money on that being your problem

Exposure to the VW dealers here - sorry dealer - have so far been limited to the actual purchase and first oil change.
The former comprised: 1) an hour or so tour of the sales brochure; 2) me speccing the car; 3) me being told I had a choice of either a white 3-door or a red 5 door, both available now, or a 3-month wait until the next delivery; 4) me being later informed that the red had just been sold; 5) me then being informed that the white had also been sold; 6) me being informed that the red was available again (guy's credit application fell through); and finally 7) me buying the red car and driving it home. As experiences go, efficient(ish) but hollow.
Lubricants change was reasonably painless but involved a fair amount of drip mopping-up afterwards (car, not me). Did have to ask fo rmy Pipercross back though.
Still waiting on the call...

Why are you not calling out your breakdown cover sorry if that sounds silly

That is a very Sensible question Captain, but maybe things work a little differently in the Middle East?

If people don't post their location, how is he to know?
Wish they would be a bit more considerate as it's not too much to ask.

Does he not state his location in original post?

Indeed, I must get around to updating my member details.
Recovery does work a little different here. For 'recovery' read transportation to a garage of your choosing. Better to call VW direct and cut out the middle man. I also bargained on getting someone a little more sympathetic to my front splitters, alloys, etc. when they put the car on the transporter, not to mention the fact that I couldn't get it out of P on the DSG so thought it may need lifting (which they did).
Just got a call saying that they're still looking at it. Am expecting another one soon to say that they've progressed to opening the bonnet...

LOL
It's nice to know some things are the same wherever you live in the world! That is unless we Brits are just used to a Third World type service at home........

Out of interest, what was the outcome of this CardinalC?
-
VW had the car for a couple weeks all told. Very little feedback during that time, and only in response to my calls. I began to brace myself for an unpleasant ride. Finally received a brief call to say that the car was ready to be picked-up or delivered. Curious to know the details of the outcome, I headed over to their workshops. Best I could get was that there was a fault on the "controller" (?) and some parts of the charging system. These were all replaced, along with a new battery, under warranty. They also threw in a free valet. Despite a lack of communication and a general vagueness in the feedback, the overall experience was very positive (and a lot less painful than the experience I had many years ago at a UK VW dealership over a Corrado VR6's faulty distributor). And so far, so good...
Interested to hear if anyone else has had similar problems with "controllers".
Now busy 'preparing' the car for shipping back to UK in a couple of months. For this, read: 1) center armrest installation; 2) replace open center drinks holder with the covered version; 3) iPod connectivity; 4) tyre pressure warning system installation; 5) door security lights; and 6) new GTI mats. I'll leave the conversion stuff (headlights, speedo, etc.) until we're back in the UK.
-
All's good so far then.
You'll soon be back at the mercy of UK dealerships and weather. You've missed summer BTW. It arrived in March and ended in April. Was nice while it lasted though.
Now I see why you have been scouring the 'other forum' and posting about the TPMS tyre pressure thingies. Yes, I am a double agent who goes by a pseudonym(sp) and your every move is being tracked.......
