Title: Alloy wheels - how big?
Post by: jayb on 21 March 2005, 10:04
Hey all,

There's been no sign of the dreaded water light since my last post so I'm presuming it's all clear. In the meantime, I spent the weekend looking at alloy wheels but don't have a clue about where to start. I think 17s would look quite good, but does anyone know - would they rub on the arches? What tyre size would I need to put on them? At the mo, there are 15" BBS's and mk3 springs and dampers.

Cheers,

Jason

ASAIK you can get away with 205-40-17 without any arch work.

I went a little wider at 215/40/17 and had to get my arches rolled (?25 a corner) but wouldn't recommend it as it seems to go through wheel bearing for fun now

all depends on what drop you go for. if you're after that 'scared cat' look then you can run 17's easy. but with my 60mm drop on 205/40/17's they rubbed really bad.

don't get demontweeks to roll your arches. they're terrible, my bodyshop did my drivers front and it's so smooth compared to the other 3.

mine seems alright so far on wheel bearings.

Would the car ride higher on 17s?

60mm drop looks just right. I might try a slight drop down again once I have g60 arches and completely rolled so no rubbing.
