Title: Spark plugs really tight! :(
Post by: mark-mk3gti on 08 April 2011, 17:25
Noticed today my in 02 light flashing, so thought I'd have a look round at changing the plugs first.

Only got 1 out of the 4 to come out fairly straight forward, one starts to turn then it stops, 1 barely turns and the last turns a bit and stops as well..

The one that did come out didn't look bad, so don't think it's essential to change, but may improve fuel consumption a bit if I cud change em

Tried spraying wd40 at em and leaving a bit, then tried with engine warm at 50 then nipped to shops and got to 76 but Only slight improvement,

Have called it a day cos don't wanna break em cos it's my daily, but unsure as what to do.. Should I take to a garage and pay to get em changed then at least if they balls it up there is some sort of comeback to them..

Any thoughts?

I would let a garage have a go tbh

Yeah that's what I was thinking, just thought there maybe some old wives tale that would make them fly out, lol,

It is evident that there is no anti seize on the plugs, don't understand why u wouldn't put it on, really silly in my opinion, know people wud argue not to put it on, but old cars and all,

Anyway off to the garage at some point it will be...

Cheers Wayne...

Btw did u ever get that golf a while back? Mk3 wasn't it?

I'd spray a shot of plusgas around the plugs and use careful steady force to undo them. Use a breaker bar or something to make leverage. Do it with a stone cold engine too to avoid stripping the threads.

As above, Id loosen them as much as you feel comfortable with then spray some Plusgas into the recesses then leave over night if possible then get a decent bar or ratchet on them the following day. Even if the one you did get out looked fine they've still got to come out at some point so why leave them longer?

No, no, no, no, no.

Sorry.

DO NOT USE A BREAKER BAR IF THEY ARE THAT TIGHT. They sheer and you will be taking off the head.

Use a solid bar, not too big, and go back and forward in small amounts. Firm but not too firm. Hard to explain.

I'd let a garage do it if you aren't confident.

I had a mk3 a while ago, looking at mk4 1.8t or Leon 1.8t's at the moment.

I say a breaker bar so you can put some more force into it. I remember trying to undo the plug son the 8v for the first time since owning it and the standard spark plug tool wouldn't cut it, just hurt my hands. Got a deep socket, a small breaker bar and voila.

make sure engine has warmed up before you try and remove them. as already suggested, work back and forth till they feel feel looser and then attempt removal.

+1 To above, make sure engine is warm, they will break if you try it when it is cold.

lol, i wondered when that was coming :)

for the record, i didnt try it, was an idea off vw vortex,

ive decided as the one i got out the spark plugs looks ok, im not gonna mess about with em for a bit, ive tried everything i been told, and they aint budging, i think it will be a case of of go for it one day and have helicoils at the ready, cos its my daily i cant mess it up, but when the time comes, they will come out (hopefully) one way or another.
my local garage says they would try but if snapped it will be 50 per plug and someone comes out and does it for them.. wish i knew who it was..

neither would I!! but apparently this guy does it in a special way as to avoid it somehow, hence why its 50quid a hole, thou i am not sure what he could do!
the other option would be to get a replacement head i guess, but its all gonna cost, and that tes down south sells refurbed/rebuilt 8v engines for 695, or pick one up cheap somewhere from breakers..

who knows..

Why not book it in with a garage to get the plugs replaced, they may have more luck.

the garage i normally go, said it could be a few days if they break one, so id be without a car, i go on hols in august so thinking i could leave it with em while im away, then if they snap, they should have time to sort it...

Cant see how!
The ONLY way is to drill them out and retap.

neither can i to be honest, and im not that mechanically minded, it is a bit of a tw@t really, and the guy i bought it off was a honda technician, and has spent a fortune on it over his time owning it, but somehow neglected to spark plugs, it wasnt something i thought to check when i bought it, cos i needed a car asap, and this seemed a good buy..
ill get it sorted at somepoint.. :) however any other old tricks, are welcomed..:)  i was told to run reddex through it, cos can help clear the build up on the plugs, but like i said to robz last night, i have heard mixed opinions on that treatment...

I can't see how Redex or any other fluid is going to penetrate the deeply seated and corroded threads of a spark plug.

What you need is the USA version of WD40.
Trouble is you can only get it from 2 sources in this country!
Its great stuff, can really recommend it.
It is a proper ingress fluid that trully does impregnate threaded joints.

Cant remeber the name off hand but will post tomorrow with details.

WD40 is after all only a water displacement.

worth a try that mark??
know the felling when its your daily. the urge to sort thing is burning away but you darent in case you make it worse!
i gave in to the temptation a few times and the worst happened, shell still hasnt forgiven me :D

Yep that's it! Gibbs Brand! Cheers Psycho!

I did go down the garage last night and look!

YES it is worth a try! If that stuff dont loosen those plugs nothing will.
But OP dont expect instant results! When you get it give it a really, really long spray into each hole, Oh take leads off first!
Then warm the engine (having reconnected leads), switch off and leave for about half an hour to let it soak in, then try to undo, but use a normal tool DO NOT use a socket and breakerbar!!
