I have a 99 A3 1.8Turbo at the min and want to sell this o r part-ex it against a GTI.
Is there anything i should know first about them?
anything to look for?
Also are they reliable, i wont be using it a lot, two nights a week then my weekend driving, will it be reliable for this??
I have seen this advert can someone have a look please and let me know......
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p
any help is needed Thanks,
-
Think there is a buying guide in the FAQ dude ;)
They are reliable if they have been looked after but as with any 20yr old car check the service history but in the buying guide it coveres all the things you should look out for and check

Sorry here is the link of one i have seen...
What do you think, what about the milage, will it just need constant repairs from now on???

Repair is a strong word but be prepared to keep it well maintained.. Old Golfs love TLC to keep them sweet. But, if you're handy with basic maintenance it's no bother.
-
Is it expensive TLC????
what are your experiances,
-
Also....
, will it be reliable for road trips and would it put up with a good blast along country roads
-
how long is a bit of string? . . . .
there are so many different things that can go wrong as with any car,
i cant view the add, but does it say FSH? If it has i would check to see when things like, cambelt, waterpump, starter motor etc have been changed
If they are looked after and serviced right they are great fun but as ive found be prepared to fix alot of things, not too expensive but sh!t goes wrong!
if you like the car just working and beign fine keep the audi, if you want a mkii be prepared to spend some money on wither a mint one or one that you will need to replace things on
again its a 20yr old car
but again check out the buying guide in the FAQ

I concur, nothing but hassle, but you get hooked, plus petrol prices will be 2 quid a litre by the end of the year!
-
I would keep looking... That one you list just looks GASH with those wheels...
Hand brake looks like it needs looking at too...
If you wanting a daily driver and you must have a 16V (Valver) get one thats been properly sorted..
Do a search on buy one on here there is loads of info... Biggest issue is RUST!
Also look at Matey-Matey for their Buying info thread...

Mk2's are great and will bring you many smiles and many a glance from passing haters,But be warned it comes at a price. It will be costly at times with many a bashed knuckle and sometimes frustration.
Once you have been around them for a while tho its all good and there are always people to help out with advice.
I fix mine regularly lol.But i still prefer it too my wifes ultra reliable mk3
-
Do you think that once you get all the main jobs done and get them right they cost you that much? I don´t think so, I had to spend about 300 quid on mine to get it up to scratch, there is nothing wrong with it now, touch wood!

I would agree to a point... For me it's also about keeping on top of other items and I try and fix stuff before it fails & with OEM parts Or An OEM parts supplier, I'm sick and tired of replacing cheap sh!te that was put on just over a year ago...

Once again from me. Buy a gti on the condition of the paintwork.
THEN look at the mechanical side of things.
That silver one looks gash imo.

Any amount of cash you'll have to spend on bringing a 16v into order will still be less that getting a new/"newer" car. Saying that, that silver piece of sh!t is not worth it.

J Reg, 158,000 bought 2 years ago (170k now) = £625.
Once the Valver is up to speed it will be a far better car, and you'll be hooked.
Cars are for driving. You'd be hard pressed to find a better drivers car.
Any old diesel sh!t box will get you from A to B.
The MK2 16v isn't regarded as the best GTI for nothing.*
*awaits the onslaught, but is fully armed and the graph is ready.
-
trouble is the mk1 is a far far better 'drivers' car  lighter and much better power to weight ratio
-
16v is no more or less reliable than the 8v from my experience!
And an all round better package as standard
These cars are inexpensive to fix if you don't mid getting your hands dirty, and not much goes wrong with them that's out of the ordinary. I always turn to the MK2 when the Corrado breaks down
You may miss the comfort of the A3 in the winter months.

Brakes.

Brakes.
:lipsrsealed:
not lhd the only reason brakes are bad is the flex in the linkage  unless you've driven a lhd mk1 then you have no idea
-
well having had my fair share of problems and my first winter with the mkii it wasn't too bad
Yes I have been so Pissed off with the car at times to the point i've nearly put it up for sale, but then there is something about them, and I can guarantee once ive sorted what needs to be fixed and its all running right will be a awesome drivers car
MKii's unfortunately are all about the summer. . . . . oh hang on we are so nearly there!!
But as everyone has said be prepared to spend some money, but its money well spent
-
Don't buy on price either mate, if theres one going for £1000 dont thyink it must be crap and a 2k plus one is good, I bought one for 2k, it did have an engine conversion but 1 year later I've got a 2 holes in my floor pan and a hole just buy the boot! Only worth like £500 as it as the moment
-
if your going on about mk1's you need to make some serious adjustments to them.
like cutting out the wishbones mounts and welding in a mk2 subframe to stop the frount chassi legs flexing.and fitting an LSD to G box
the a 2.0 16v mk1 is fun.
