Title: strange drivers side water leak behind servo!
Post by: Simpson on 05 April 2011, 22:02
Right as always struggling with a leak on the golf! this one has one on the drivers side coming through where the wires go through the bulkhead behind the brake servo. Car is mk2 golf, any ideas, how to fix this? Has anyone else had this problem? thanks

prob not from the grommet as water doesnt get back there really, suspect the problem is higher up. either the bonnet release cable or the blanking plate over the LHD blower housing hole. take the ecu bracket out and have a good look under and around it in the scuttle area

its defo coming through the grommet as I have alreayd sealed the bonnet release and the ecu spare plate up, i have poured water and it defo seems to flow off the turret down there! I cant get to them due to the servo and master cylinder in the way. Thanks

Check your scuttle panel, right in the corners, there'll be a small drain hole. There's a drainage pipe that runs under the wheel arch from that hole and if that's blocked, which they tend to do after a while, the water won't drain from the scuttle and it'll enter the car.

I had this problem on my MK2, so cleared the drain with some stiff electrical cable by pushing it down and rinsing with a hose.

cheers didnt realize there was a pipe there, thought the only drain pipe was from the sunroof? is that under the fron or the back fo the scuttle? thanks again

Can't remember exactly, but I seem to remember it being right into the corner, so possibly at the back, can't remember if there's some trim to remove in the scuttle or not, but you'll soon see when you start to look for it, you'll probably see a collection of dirt which may be what's causing the blockage.

cheers there is no blockage there, its quite a big hole at the front of the scuttle. im almost definite its coming through the wiring grommet though somehow.

What happens if you pour water there? Does it come out of the inside of the wheel arch?

if water is getting behind the servo when you pour watyer in the scuttle, you have a rust hole somewhere under there. the scuttle ashould be totally sealed to the bulkhead on the inside of the bay, water should ONLY drain out of the drains either side of the scuttle where the side repeater wires go to the inner wings

Or the drain holes in the scuttle are blocked, as it was on mine.

cheers lads, i appreciate what you are telling me but when i pour water on the turret it comes inthrough the wiring grommet, so it muct be running off the turret inheavy rain. I cant see any holes in the bulkhead.

water wont get on the turret with the bonnet shut tho!

it might be that the cable grommets are out of position, they are a right slag to get seated properly. if you take the dash under tray out and get in the footwell you can see them, wiggle about till the lip seats properly.

maybe you have a rust hole under the wing near the a pillar, its a common problem on the mk2
