A friend of mine has just text me asking if a turbo glowing red after a short but spirited drive is normal, any ideas?
-
My mates old tuned up escort rs turbo used to glow red

It aint an old escort though, tis an em kay 4.

yea its normal, my k03s exhaust housing glows red hot after a spirited drive. Have to remember the turbo provides back pressure to the exhaust gases from the engine which are more like constant flames than the name exhaust gases implies.
One reason not to switch off the engine straight away and to let the engine cool down after a hard run.

look good wen there glowing eh

Hmm It could be either running very lean or it's being starved of oil? :undecided:
-
And if fluctuating/surging boost is present, would it still be normal?
-
Should not be getting that hot after a short drive.
-
unless the turbo really pushed i wouldnt expect it to glow red..
-
That's a point you must be really going for it, or as mentioned it might be leaning out. I remember my stage 1 running red hot when I go cruising and when I went for dyno sessions and had the fuelling monitored it showed I was running a little rich as hoped, so it does happen.
-
I had this on my ERST, fuelling g was too lean
-
should never run that hot surely, my old skyline did but that was 500bhp and 2 hrs around a track!!!
-
have to remember though it's not necessarily about the power your pushing, these k03/s turbos are small very small and restrictive this serves to increase the egt drastically.
A larger turbo will allow exhaust gasses to be expelled quicker and preventing build up of egt. Think of it like this, a larger turbo requires less boost for it to make the same power a smaller turbo does.
It's common knowledge that these borg warner k03/s and even k04 runs very hot anyone who has ever seen a k04-02x will know how hot they run - it's extremely rare to find a k04 manifold or turbo that hasn't got substantial cracks.
Most members of my family are pushing big turbos and they never glows my cousin is running a gt35r ams kit pushing slightly over 600bhp but then he has a nice flowing AMS equal length stainless steel mani and gt35r, my brother has also just slapped on a gtx series turbo pushing about 750+ bhp at the wheels and that only glows because well its quite savage.

Also supposed to let the engine idle before turning off as the turbo carrys on spinning at a mad speed for a while, as soon as you turn the engine off your killing the oil feed to the turbo, and a turbo spinning with no oil is not good at all
-
been for many short spirited drives and never got the turbo glowing red, sounds like starving of oil.
To get it glowing like mad would least take a good drive really going hard up the revs in each gear.

It could be the cause of the problem, certainly you want to make sure the map is good and that there's no problems with the car. I would say get the map backed up if you got the equipment then upload the standard map on then diagnose the car from there.
Glowing is cool but not if it's the result of a lean mixture, going to kill your pistons quick. Im sure my turbo only glows because I've maxed the little k03s out pushing over 240bhp so it's throttling the engine effectively.
