Picked up my first MkII on sunday  it's a royal blue, 8valver with 120000 on the clock, it's not a minter but it's pretty solid and with a bit of help from Benrevs on the bodywork & paint It should tidy up nicely  also need to re-stick the head lining and find a O/S door trim.
I put it straight in for an MOT on yesterday that I thought it would fly through but turns out I need to replace 3 brake lines and sort out the exhaust mount (I didnt notice it comes off the mount so easily) so it's going up on the ramps on thursday for those to be sorted ready for a retest on friday  Hopefully it'll be on the road by the weekend.
on with a few pics.

The exhaust needs to be remounted in this pic

there's this tiny dent and rust patch that needs to be sorted.
and this is the worst rust patch on the boot
-
Nice... Looks good and if that's the only rust on it you've done well. Engine bay looks like it could do with a good scrub.
-
Does not look too bad.
-
Scrott, I dare you to look under the arches  Bring it round for THE treatment when its mot is sorted.
-
Cheers guys

I think the whole car could do with a good scrub, got Friday off work so that's a job for after the retest.
Externally thats the worst the eye can see but I haven't had the balls to take any trim off yet; but the sills and inner arches are solid so hopefully the outer arches are good.
I've got some welding to do just infront of the battery tray but nothing I cant handle. Can't complain for £400 eh
You free on Friday Ben?
-
Awesome... do the right thing, have a look behind the trim, i was the same with my bodykit but my theory is, if you can't see anything as it stands, then go looking before it finds you.
-
That I am, that I am.
-
like it. 400 is a bargain if ur arches arent slowly rotting under the plastics. my front left was but i wouldnt have know if i didnt full lock n rip my arch off.
not too much work for the mot either
-
Cheers matey
I put the golf through the retest on Friday and then Benrevs and I spent a few hours cleaning and polishing it  It looks 1000xs better now! Cheers Ben! I then spent the rest of the weekend enjoying driving her!
Then yesterday about half a mile from my house I noticed 5th gear starting to whine  so quickly shifted back into 4th for the rest of the journey, looked underneath to see that the gearbox oil was leaking from cap at the end, so I popped it off and resealed it, topped it back up with oil and took it for a spin! no more whining in 5th thank god

polished up really well. you must be happy with that
-
Cheers yeah it did clean up well, only problem is I've now spotted a few more small dents  It probably could do with a complete repray as well, there certainly is 21 years worth of stone chips.
The interior was also filthy when I got it but that came out pretty good too

Also got rid of the de-badged grill, looks a lot better with the standard one IMO.

Looks good - so much better with a proper grille on it
Just seen your location, not too far from me.
-
Why is half of your ashtray missing Scott? Never noticed before!

Cheers matey, yeah the old grille was quite a bodge  looked ok until I saw the back of it.
Why is half of your ashtray missing Scott? Never noticed before!
And I'm guessing its because someone wanted access to the cigarette lighter without having the ashtray open, its quite handy like that for plugging my phone in though.

 Unfortunately I had a bit of an accident involving being blinded by an oncoming cars headlights, a sharp very slippery corner and a bush on Saturday night  I tried everything I could to get it around the corner but there was just no grip at all so I braced myself for impact! Pretty annoyed as this was my first crash
But It looks like the chassis is still straight so It will be repaired

The good news is that I have already found someone breaking a Royal blue GTI so I will be going to collect a load of front end parts next weekend hopefully
-
Ouch, hope you're alright. Certainly did a proper job on that! :undecided:
Good luck with the repairs!
-
Might be worth getting it checked to see if the chassis is straight, that's had a hard knock.
-
Cheers, yeah I'm good thanks, just a minor case of whiplash but all is good.
I'm just going to do the old fashioned plumb bob, mark a few points on the floor and take some measurements trick initially before I spend a load of money on it but I will get a 4wheel alignment check done to be sure when its all fixed if the initial measurements are fine.
The main impact was pretty central and the right hand sides damage is mostly cosmetic so we really don't think it will be far out at all if it is bent, it didn't pull to the side at all while I was being towed so that is always a good sign. Fingers crossed eh! I would just rather save it than see another one broken and sent to the scrappy.

+1, much rather see a mk2 saved, if it was a mk3 that would be another story :lipsrsealed:
Bloody hell mate, looks a nasty one! Glad to hear you're ok. Hopefully the chassis isn't bent and it doesn't cost too much to repair.
Good luck with the repairs
-
Damn that looks harsh at first... I think you'll be alright though looking at it... mine took a heavy knock but all the force went to the N/S chassis leg which really messed the car up, both your legs look ok in the pics.
Oh and glad you're OK!
-

Ohhhh Matron!!

Trust you!...
Only thing I can think to look out for is that because of the type of smack its had, right in the middle, I would be concerned that it has pulled the legs closer together slightly. (Queue Wherry!)

If you smacked me in the middle i think i would close my legs too!
I think you could just get away with it, but best of luck :afro:

Yeah, if that has happened he should be OK spreading them again.
Mine was fixed, no reason this can't be.
-
Cheers for the well wishes, My whiplash has pretty much gone completely today
    I'm glad I wasn't smacked that hard between my legs. oooooof
I was thinking that last night so I'm going to take a tape measure to Benrevs gti to compare the two, I need to do some work on the N/S front chassis rail section and battery tray while it's apart anyway as it's had the usual tin worm attack, not a problem though as I'm quite a confident welder
I'll keep you all up to date on progress!
-
Well on closer inspection everything looks straight apart from the O/S chassis rail at the front, this section and the battery tray was a bit rotten and has pulled in slightly, but it is all in front of the suspension and engine mounts  I think If it was solid then I might not have been so lucky. I needed to do some work on it anyway and it will straighten out easily enough. The N/S chassis rail is perfect
My dad and I got the golf over to my workshop last night and I'm going to make a start on pulling the engine tomorrow night.
At the weekend I picked up a new Bonnet, slam panel, lights, front crossmember, a complete standard exhaust system and a complete engine & gearbox  Just need to find a O/S front wing now as nowhere seems to have any in stock, the N/S front wing is good enough to save.
Sorry pics are a bit dark, I haven't finished wiring up all the lights in my workshop yet.

Made a bit of progress with the strip down last night. I got the damaged wing off, the engine/gearbox is ready to be pulled and got the exhaust off.

Sorry to read about the crash dude! I'm glad your saving her from the scrappy. And now you have an excuse to give her the full repaint :)

If I could afford to go for a full respray at the moment I would love too but unfortunatley funds don't allow, I also just bought another pile of japanese rust for my next project in the form of a Suzuki LJ80
Had a few hours on the golf at the weekend, pulled the engine and straightened the chassis rail out a bit.
I think I broke a few engine mounts

-
Ouch, must have been some impact.
Glad you're ok though. As the others have said, good to see you trying to put it back on the road rather than letting it get scrapped. All the best for the rest of the rebuild.
-
Cheers mate  the rest of it is just too solid to let it go to the scrappy!
just ordered the last two things I need to put it back together, a wing and a gearbox mount so give it a week or 2 and it should be back on the road  fingers crossed!
-
:afro:
-
Got the new engine in tonight, I'll be starting on the metal work either tomorrow or Saturday
-
Good luck mate!
-
She's getting there. I couldn't find a replacement battery tray that was available now so I thought F'it I'll just make one. The Golf will never be original again and it's not a show car so it's no big deal IMO It wont be hard for me to cut it out and replace it with a proper repair panel if I ever feel like a full on resto but at the moment I just need it back on the road.
Got the new wing on, and slam panel to get everything lined up in the correct position (sorry pics are a bit dark)

Cut all the rust out and started making a new tray

Got Thursday off work to repair the other side as it was too crumpled to pull out so It shouldn't be long before its back on the road.
-
Nice work... should be back to how it was in no time.
-
brilliant battery tray and fab skills there
-
Cheers guys, its not perfect but I'm pretty happy with it so far, just need to make something to secure the battery now and give it a lick of paint.
-
Had a few hours on the gti today, got all the welding finished its not looking too bad to be fair  not some of my tidiest welding though so i hit it with a flap disc :smug:

-
It's aliiiiiiive  got the gti on the road yesterday but there's still a few niggly bits to sort as I'm missing one of the bumper clips on the O/S wing so I need to get the bumper to sit a bit better, need some new fog lights and still need to get the wing sprayed and to mount the wheel arch trim but ill do that after its been sprayed.
But on the plus side it drives really well and the new engine pulls like a train compared to the old one  its nice to have a standard exhaust on there as well, the old one was a bit too loud for a daily drive.
-
Awesome work getting it back on the road so soon! Another one saved from the scrappy!
-
Just realised that I haven't updated this thread for ages so here's a bit of an update
New wheels fitted and it's been lowered with some Gmax springs and shocks that I picked up when I bought it and ;left them on a shelf in the workshop for 11 months  only really fitted them as one of the standard rear shocks started leaking and I needed to go thorough an MOT she sailed through with only 2 advisories, I do need to re hang the front bumper though as it sits a bit low at the front.
