So, I was looking at a link from Horney and then stumbled upon THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xhcKBAQ5sg&feature=player_profilepage)

Love it.

I wonder if mine would make it round and survive!

Well if we both go at least there's a better chance that one of them will survive to take us home again.

Heh.  I thought those who wanted to see this would have seen it already.

I think the copy on Vimeo is better quality. http://vimeo.com/11090862

With regards to general stuff about the 'ring.

The video is from a track day last year, run by Destination Nurburgring.  You should not video, or time on Tourist Fahren (known as TF - 'normal' open time on the track).  It is forbidden.

I would actually advise against going over there now for TF.  It is exceedingly unlikely that your insurance (especially that on a rented Minibus) will cover you - there are generally exclusions in most policies these days, which specifically exclude the 'ring.

These are 'not legal' under EU law but what this means is that the insurer will come after you to recover costs afterwards.

These costs could extend a long way as you'd be paying a third party claim, which isn't an issue if it's track closure at tens of thousands per hour, or a few metres of barrier at a couple of thousand, but if a young German banker on his motorbike drops it on your spilt coolant and is run over and seriously injured the compensation claim could run into millions.

This is why I'm now doing track days over there, when budget allows.

Last year we split the costs four ways and it worked really well.  At around £400 for the day for the car that's a cost of £100 each and the days generally run 9-5.  Provided you take some sensible mates and a well-prepped car and there are no breakdowns/crashes then you'll each bang out 4-6 laps each driving and the same passengering.

This is more than enough for most people.

I would recommend travelling two days before the track day, spend the day before spectating and enjoying the scenery (and it is amazing), do the track day laps and then travel back the next day.  Spectating is best done with a mountain bike, although I can't recommend riding the mountain bike from Brunnchen to Ex-Muhle one evening after the track has closed.  That would be mental.

On the above basis, if you budget £400 for the trip ex-beer you should be ok.

This figure assumes four days including travelling, three nights accommodation, using ferries Dover-Calais off-peak in a car with the track car on a trailer and four people travelling in the tow vehicle.  Accommodation is priced at Sliders Guesthouse rates, which I do believe to be the best value and best 'experience' accommodation out there - run by two VERY fast English bikers.  They also have an honesty-based beer fridge, stocked with Oettinger beer.  The budget includes 10 Euros for lunch and 20 for dinner each day.

The fuel in that cost is based on 1200 miles on the tow vehicle at 30MPG (using current diesel prices in Germany) and 20 laps at 18MPG for the track car.

These are actual figures from my previous trips, not fantasy nonsense.

Stink you were washing your hair or something last year .  Are you interested if I go over there this year?

^^^ Very informative thank you.  The chances of taking mine over there any time soon are pretty slim.  I'm best off going somewhere local first and to be honest I won't be doing any of that this year either.  A year of tweaking and breaking her in me thinks.

Thank you DH! Gives me a good idea :afro:

You're right to say many policies exclude the 'ring, all mine have stated this in the small print over recent years, even though theyve included EU cover.

it should also be noted that the beer fridge is of a very good size with much beer in it.  the pixies highly approve of it

I agree, excellent video that

I was the patient one in the MKV

DH has very good driver skills and I took a few brave pills when he took me for a passenger lap.

Passenger laps are a good way to get to know the 'ring too - as long as you think you can trust the driver. I've seen my mates jump into any old car with a total stranger (including me!!) and sometimes it can make for a hairy experience.

DH is also right about TF days, insurance etc. Better safe than sorry.

Meh, I'm just an old hacker.

This man leans more heavily on ESP than anyone I've ever met.  The Circa 8minute passenger lap I had with him was astonishing - so impressive.

I have had some amazing passenger laps out there, back in the day - Honda NSX, tweaked Evos and Scoobies.  One of the most memorable was in an old Subaru Impreza, with a guy who had done a lot of circuit racing.  The car was VERY well set up and he was on it.

So on it that later that day he smeared it down the concrete before Ex-muhle.

Cheers DH

I'll be back over there soon.

I have an RS3 on order, but I'm hearing some good info on the ED35, which looks like it could be an even better version than the ED30. Either way the RWD Partridgemobile IS-F Sport will be history soon.
