Title: Let there be light...
Post by: AGB on 03 April 2011, 20:28
After deliberation and a temporary foray into Philips H7 bulbs (+5% brightness improvement and better light colour temperature), I decided to stop mucking about and fitted xenons. Oh, and cruise control. Basically, most of the front of the car and dash has been off in the last day or so. Given the choice of the new LED style versions, I elected to purchase the old style which were available at the time I bought the car. I feel like I know the VW parts catalogue like the back of my hand now and there were a few times in tugging at some of the plastics that I did wonder if I was going to be ordering some new dash trim!

I was out in Suffolk this weekend so took a quick snap to share.

Looking good mate.  They would go perfectly with my new rear LED's.

Just out of interest what was the total cost for the lights?

Cheers,

Jim

Ta. Realise it's less interesting for the guys here who ticked the box at purchase...

£838 all in using Kufatec parts. Factor in the cost of Vagcom if you don't have it or I think a couple of guys on here could oblige with coding the lights in.

I've been thinking about the LED rears but actually like the half moons I got as stock just as much. Only question I have is the size/brightness of the reverse light, how do you find it compared to the original lights? Is it bright enough to use? I've just got a swine of a granite kerb to parallel park against and I actually need a decent amount of light to make out the kerb in my mirrors.

Xenon's are nice but I couldnt justify that kind of money.....Or could I ;o)

I have a camera so I don't have issues with parking in the dark mate but I'd imagine that without the camera it wouldnt be that bright.

Worked out cheaper than when speced from the factory then.

Did I mention I had been having some problems with the coding? They're installed, it just means I can't go out at night though...

I'll take some shots at night with them on. Amazing difference it has to be said.

Only because I didn't have the AFC module installed. They're manually adjusted which is absolutely fine for me. I got a wall target setup using a mate's Golf R and adjusted to the same level as his on the same surface and don't appear to have blinded anyone yet.

What problems are you having?

None, they work perfectly. I was being silly about not having the Xenons on in the picture.

A stupid law it is but do you know it is against the law to have xenons without headlight washers. Just that it might be a problem when trading in.

Yeah, I'm keeping the halogens and will swap them back to stock come the time should that be an issue. I plan on keeping the car for quite some time anyway. I'm sure the law will have changed pointlessly many times more by then, but thanks for the heads up.

I didn't think my picture's EXIF would be investigated but yes, it's a great lens. It's a fair lump to lug about, couldn't face the weight of the 400/2.8, it's back breaking on long haul as I'm from Africa and am always going back and forth. Yeah, shot was on the road leading past RSPB Minsmere. I'm based in London but get out to Suffolk quite a bit.

When you factor in the price for the basic GTI and then add on whatever options you require, the car becomes up in the region of what have always been classed as "premium cars" and therefore IMO xenons, cruise control, rear camera and parking sensors especially should already be in the basic spec.  I reckon the only options that you should have to pay for are larger alloys, and sunroof.

I think VW should take a long hard look at themselves and stop trying to rip off their punters.

I totally agree. When you way up the price of a GTI with the options its crazy money really. Especially as when you come to trade the car you don't get much for having the options.

I did't bother doing that, just can tell a good lens from an iPhone! Enjoy the 400 - heavy but incredible!

Too right Amanda.
Even more so with an R which comes with a pretty basic spec list for a £30k car (even though is has Xenons) and looks like a base model inside unless you spec some expensive kit.

Is that a bottle under the car or is it part of the Xenon retro-fit?  :embarassed:

Love the scaffolding.

Pretty sure. I installed the awesomeness module as well, the lens flare you're seeing is from the awesomeness field that surrounds the car.

I can give you the part number from the VW parts catalogue if you like?

Indeed, an awesome glow comes from the awesomeness field that surrounds the car, this feature comes as standard on all genuine xenon headlamps

It isnt against the law chap. Not all cars with xenons have washers fitted as standard. HID's fitted in halogen lamps will soon be ilegal by 2012.

Great work AGB
