Title: reverse goes forward?

ok just bought my first mk4 golf gti, tesy drove no probs, drove home no probs, then i come to reverse onto driveway, it goes forward???, im deffo putting it into reverse(pushdown) but car goes forward? iv managed to get it into reverse eventually but need this sorting, also 1st gear is a b!tch to get into, keeps goin into 3rd! any ideas?  :smiley:

Yep defo gearlinkage. Did this when I built my mk2. Had to be towed to get out my garage. Just need realigning. Don't know how the mk4 set up is so I don't know if its easy to do. But if u loosen linkage and put car into reverse. Then find revearse on the box it should sort it all out again.

Id take it to a garage to get the linkage set up, shouldnt be expensive. You got rid of the mk3 then mate?

On my 6n polo it was a small nylon part that broke and wouldn't allow the reverse gear to link/align in the gearbox, unfortanetly the part in question wasn't on any of the blueprints and was replaced with a cable tie  :grin: Never had a problem after even after 30k of driving.

have a look in the engine bay to see if your gear linkage arm hasnt broke. Mine broke the other day and i had the same problem as you. Only cost £12 here what it looks like

garage seem to think its a gearbox problem, but im not sure gnna try reset that linkage today first before garage costs! :smiley:

does it go into first ok? check to see theres nothing in the way of the gear selector on top of the gearbox
