Title: Rear bumper skin removal to retro fit parking sensors - Any 'how to' links?
Post by: CHB100 on 29 March 2011, 17:33
Guys, you'll be pleased to hear I've carbon wrapped the chin lip AND rear diffuser!!!(not an easy task I can tell you) Will post pics ASAP.

In the meantime I'm retro fitting some laserline rear parking sensors which fit from behind the bumper skin, so removal is in order. Any links or diagrams/pics on how to or anything to look out for. I guess it's similar to front end.

Also, the reversing light is on the boot door!!! fcs!!! Will I have to remove ALL the door trim to get a wire to it? Just had a go and that trim just don't wanna budge!

Anyway I can ID the reversing wire lower down in the loom.

Cheers!

The boot trim comes off with a bit of force after you remove a couple of screws if I remember correctly?

A wire from your reverse light is going to have to go up to the hinge and then back down to the bumper.
I'm sure there is a tutorial somewhere (maybe on another site?) on how to remove the boot door trim as a few folk have done it to retrofit reverse cameras.

C'mon we need photos - pronto!

For the wiring can you nnot find the wire that goes to the tailgate and take it from there?  It'll be a hassle taking it back up and round won't it?

Also am I right in thinking you are going to drill the bumper to fit these?

Too right I'll drill the bumper, won't let any monkey loose on my motor ( I am retired but a pro). Wiring not my exact field of excellence. I'm told it's the green wire in the loom, which I've now exposed, just!! Trouble is there'es 3!!! Green/white, green/ brown & green/ ? forgot.
Don't expect anyone to know which to cut.
AM I'll perhaps trace to fuse box.

–   Remove tail lights → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.94
–   Remove bolts -4- on left and right in area of wheel housing liner.
–   Remove bolts -5- (point upwards) on left and right.
–   Remove bolts -2- and -3- from underneath.

Further removal is only possible with the help of a second mechanic.

–   Pull rear bumper cover -1- out of fasteners in side guides -arrows a-.
–   Pull rear bumper cover -1- parallel off vehicle -arrows b-.
–   Disconnect connectors from all electrical components.

Thanks Mike, it looks like I need to locate grey/white LH side. As reversing light ONLY works with boot lid fully shut. Would I be right in thinking there is a trip connection at the latch point??
Have got half the trim out already. Don't fancy removing LH C pillar trim with the rear air bag to locate the loom. Is it necessary?
Cheers.

For every-one's information the reversing light wire to splice into is SW/BL as in Black & Blue! Even local mate at VW dealer said it was Grey/White as per their factory diagrams.

Have now fitted laserline parking sensors and have to say 'stunning' as close to factory as you will find!
Mind you I worked on Concorde and in F1 so needless to say, requires a little bit of skill  Drilling 18mm holes in a painted bumper and fitting from behind with near flush fit and no security of a 'horrible' flange to cover/hide hole takes a lot of nerve. I recommend Valium before hand, I managed without but was a bit of a wreck truth be told.
Pics to follow and of carbon wrapping!!

Good find CHB100, wasn't sure myself so didn't want to give the wrong advice.

Glad you got it all sorted
