Thermostat could have just gone today, maybe it's stuck, it's only a cheap part anyway, not more than ?12 from ECP.

Doubt its the thermostat, sounds like the radiator fan switch to me!

P.S. A genuine thermostat & seal is about ?13 from VW, so don't bother buying one from ECP ;)

The rad fan is completely seperate to either of the sensors in that flange so no worries there.  One of them should be for the dash gauge and another is for the ECU if you have a digifant engine.

^^ yeah yours will be a digifant. you can short out the switch by jamming a paperclip in it, can't remember exactly how but i did it as a quick get me home fix when mine went tits up. but they only cost a few quid anyway.

Yeah, that sounds like your fan switch is knackered. You could do a com check on it, see at what temperature the switch is closing and then at what temperature it is opening but by the sound of it its not opening anyway so you might as well replace it.

Just looked at GSF car parts. They can do it for less than a fiver. Eurocarparts will be the same so you could try Stuart.
