Lately when I start my MK4 and let it sit for about a minute, I get a bad eggy smell. That kind of smell is usually associated with the cat converter, but I've never ever had the smell with this car. Any ideas?

I would say a cat / mixture problem, so could be a sensor going down or the cat in trouble.
-
Maybe there is a mixture problem, as the car is running like a complete bag of sh!t. MPG's are down, it's lumpy and the engine light is on. I've had engine lights come on and off since the first day I bought it. This has to be the sh!ttest car I have ever owned. Never again.

Get it scanned for codes then, if the light is on then it will not be running right.

A dead CAT will throw the whole system out, so get it replaced and happy motoring.

What fault codes am I likely to see from a dead cat?
-
lambda sensor, emission faults etc.

What are the codes for those though? I should be getting a code reader sometime this week.
