Title: 1.8t cam belt
Post by: BOGGLE on 15 March 2005, 21:34
My 1.8t is about to hit 60k and i need to sort out it's service.  Does it need the cam belt changed at 60k also?

tensioner would need doing same time as the belt anyway... and ive never seen a waterpump on a 1.8T last longer than 80k so you might aswell have it done while they have easy access to it with the cambelt off, its only an extra ?20-ish

dont forget as well as the pump (?35ish from vw on exchange basis) and the tensioner pulley (?45 ish, use vw only parts!!), there is also another small intermediate roller (?20ish, again use vw parts only), the price for the cambelt from vw is ?20 there abouts as well, its worth getting all these done at the same time as you 'change your belt' then you know you have many more miles of safe motoring with out waiting for one of the above to fail which would (from personal experience!) make your valves meet your pistons in a nasty expensive way (tensioner/roller/belt failure) or cook it if your impellor on your waterpump breaks down!!

whilst having the cambelt done the engine mount is removed (a right arse!! lol) and there is ample access to change all of these other componets at the same time, but dont go getting conned into paying alot more for having these bits done, i know from experience it only takes around 15 mins to fit the tensioner/roller/water pump as i fitted mine at the same time, the longest part of the job is refitting the engine mount etc!!
