Absolute complete and utter waste of time.  All it does is generate noise; there is NO performance gain whatsoever

Kits are around £150 plus I think

Tell him to send me the money and I'll put it towards my new kitchen

Or if he wants to do something sensible get it decatted for some proper performance benefit

sound advice but knowing him he wont listen and still go along with it he just wants that bloody escaping air noise! but as ive read up they dont create enough pressure to get release due to them not having this butterfly valve. but dont quote me if im wrong!

Tell him to get a scooby then!  Basically you fit an electronic valve into the system which opens when you release the throttle giving you the 'noise'

De-catting will give you a similar effect but will actually help performance!

Completely agree with Rhyso.

If he wants that noise tell him not to buy a diesel Golf. He is going the wrong way about it.
