Title: How does the washer pump work?
Post by: Gloves88 on 21 March 2011, 21:44
This might be a really stupid question but I cant work it out....

I've fitted a washer bottle and pump in the rear of the car and have identified the wires I need to run to it.

I believe the wiper stalk just reverses the polarity to the motor to pump the water to the front or rear but what I dont understand is, there's only one water "exit point" on the pump so how do I connect the water pipes to ensure the front and rear will work correctly?

Cheers

Early mk2s had a front bottle and rear, so only one outlet. You probs have the early pump

Fit the correct pump with 2 outlets :lipsrsealed:

Do you get pumps with two outlets?

Its a modern pump that is meant to reverse polarity to do the front and back in one.

90spec mk2's have only one pump to do the front and rear, how is the piping set up with these?

The washer pump and piping have been removed from the mk2 I have so I cant check, hence the query

One pump with 2 outlets...

The pipework goes through the bulkhead and along the drivers side of the car to the rear and then up the c pilar and through the RHD grommet on the tailgate and back down to the rear wiper unit AFAIK...

My car had a single outlet pump when I bought it, so both fronts and rears would wash when you powered the rears... 10 min job to change but it did have all the pipework in place..

Notice that the blue section has a blue outlet pointing downwards, at the other end, there is a black outlet pointing upwards
Polarity swap changes the direction of the motor, to give you water front or rear

Great cheers guys, it would seem I do have the wrong pump.

I need to get myself one of the above types.

Someone told me you get pumps that have one exit but still do the front and rear, couldnt get my head round how this would work....seems that's because it doesnt work....
