Title: Is this wiring right? Starter motor
Post by: Steve_B on 21 March 2011, 19:17
Have just taken my starter motor out to give it a refurb but now the car won't start after putting everything back. Just get a sort of groaning sound.

So have i wired it back up right? 8v digi btw.

you sure? the black lead is the one from the +ve terminal.

After some research i placed a wire between the battery +ve and the trigger for the solenoid and it made a clunking noise so i guess that means the wiring is ok and that the solenoid is working.

Looking further it seems that the starter motor itself doesn't sit in quite the same place it did before i took it off. But as the shaft centres in ther bush surely this can't make much difference?

Does that red wire come from the alternator, if so thats how mines wired up and that works. Cleaned up the terminals?

apologies my black lead is from pos and red goes to alternator, surely tho if starter is not sitting straight then it wont engage properly, there was a recent thread about a similar problem and after much messing found that the starter was fubared and batt low

battery was charged and is reading 12.2v now. starter seems to be sitting about 2-3mm to the left of where it was from what i can see from the mark it left behind. will have to loosen it up and reposition it tomorrow i guess and see if that helps

what exactly did you do to it when you refurbed it?

followed the section in Ben's dub project thread (the older one not Ben lessani) cleaned up around the magnets and the armature contacts and fitted new bell housing bush. everything looked like it went back together the same. does the starter have to line up exactly with how it was positioned before?

When my starter wouldnt kick in, it was from the broken battery, not enough amps getting to it. But that was a clicking sound, so not sure if thats your problem.

Well i might have found the problem. looked up the part number of the bush gsf gave me on their website and this is what it says:

901VG0040       STARTER MOTOR BUSH       T2 ALLOWS 12V STARTER TO FIT 6V GEARBOX

Doesn't sound right to me

Sound like the bendix is not engaging!
This is why its far eaiser to exchange a recon unit for £50 saves loads of grief.
If you want a number of a specialist who can take yours on exchange give you a brand new gen unit for £50 let me know?
Its South London based, but he will deliver I'm sure if you're in London!
