Title: Gearboxes?
Post by: simon20vt on 21 March 2011, 13:18
On an already long list of 'things to do' on my MK4, i was wondering about swapping to a 6 speed box. I was driving yesterday and i decided to see what top speed i could get out of my 1.8T. I hit 140 (on my private racetrack) but obviously being restricted by the gear ratios i couldn't go much quicker, and didnt fancy pushing it to the redline and blowing my engine.

How compatible is a 6 speed box, and what else would need changing?

Also, i presume this is going to be better top speed, but i was wondering how acceleration and 0-60 would be affected? How do the gearing ratios compare?

Has anyone swapped from 5 speed to 6 speed box, and if so, what were your thoughts on it?

If you have a 5 speed or 6 speed, or have had the luxury of driving both in a MK4, which would you prefer, and which is better?

Thanks chaps

From what I have read it is not worth changing due to the work involved plus little gains.

140mph? wow presuming you got a 1.8t 150bhp?

Driving mine it seemed to struggle past 120MPH obviously it would go faster but the you need a long straigth road. All on a private race track of course!

Yeah I wouldn't mind  a 6 speed box the 5 speed is sooo lowly geard 70mph is just over 3krpm is I remember correctly very low geared car tbh it can comfortable drive around town at 35-40mph in 5th  gear!

but as above heard it's not a worth while conversion!

I was looking at getting the 5th gear swapped out for a slightly taller gear ratio, better for cruising at motorway speeds / higher top speed...

Ive heard that it's possible to do without taking the box off but not sure what sort of cost would be involved or where to get a suitable 5th gear from.

See here for a guide / DIY:

Don't see a point as on the s3's the 6th gear has the same ratio as the 5th gear on a 5speed. Which baffles me of the point of having a 225bhp-260bhp car that has closer ratios and a sh!t final gear. Not sure what the golf gear ratio's are on the 6speed...

Ideally a 6speed gearbox needs to have all 1-5 gears of a 5speed gearbox and a higher 6th gear ratio, which I believe some lads use a gear off a tdi to do the trick.

A lot of work for little gain IMO.

I used to have a 2002 90bhp tdi, i managed 120-125mph on the autobahn in germany!

i have a stage 1 agu and most i have hit is 130ish was struggling after that quite a bit and never had enough private runway or whatever crap to see if it will hit the 140 mark  :embarassed:

AGU to 140mph is fairly easy from my experience.

Mine is ARZ, but KO4'd, but with a really crap map, only putting out 221 at the fly - i bought the car like it  but it does get there quite quickly - thing that made me ask was that i was racing a Focus ST, on the racetrack of course, and i had him quite comfortably up to about 130, when he started gaining on me, which just made me wonder about a longer 5th gear and top end speed

I know standard out the factory, VW claim 134mph, but i doubt its possible when the car is 10 years old.

Whats top speed on S3 or TT 225? both have 6 speed boxes, so would be quite easy to compare the factory figures

Would 6 speed decrease 0-60? but slightly increase top speed - all be it, not by much?

Whilst we are on the subject of gear ratios and boxes etc, im gonna throw the 4wd debate in, if i was running around 270 with KO4 - would it be worth doing 4wd conversion to put the power down a bit better than all through the front wheels, or not worth the hassel?

humm well i dunno what you guys consider quick to 130mph but the AGU is standard form is far from being  quick to this speed.
Maybe because my RSV hit's 150-165mph a number of times (without trying) on most rides I dunno. On same roads the GTI will stuggle to hit 3 figures

All on the track of course :D

But yeah its geard really really low which doesn't help with the fact the engine is resistent to rev compared to N/A..by 5000-5500rpm its about out of ideas..So pulling to redline in top is ni on impossible.Shifting at 3500-4000rpm is a really nice engine IMO of course

+1  i think we are all talking about our own individual cars, remapped to 200bhp ish plus, rather than standard, think we all know they are rather slow at a standard 150bhp

At 150bhp they are really disappointing cars, should of been at least 180 minimum out the factory, don't get me started on the brake and suspension setup either!

As for your 4wd question, don't waste your money either get a 4mo car and drop a 1.8T in or just buy a s3/tt/a4 etc in quattro with a 1.8T. The costs and work involved are not worthwhile IMO. Plus putting power down is not an issue, I have been in a LCR mk2 with 360bhp and the diff is amazing, no torque steer at all when all that power is put down (so 4wd is not a must, yes it helps during luanch and handling, but if we are talking about the 8L s3 etc of them years then the haldex system was not that great, bit slow to kick in when needed and not as responsive).

Extending 5th gear has its ups and downs, you would need to up the power otherwise acceleration would be pants on a longer 5th gear, unless off course your modding it to do 70mph on non stop motor way journeys.

As for the 6speed on a S3, the 6th gear ratio is the same as the 5th gear on a 5speed gearbox, so top end should be same maxed out!

As for closer gear ratio's again, has its ups and downs. Acceleration wise the gear shifts whilst driving/racing will be changed much more frequently which is major speed/time loss during transmission. However acceleration would be quicker, but you have to weigh that against the time lost on shifting. Then you have another issue having short gears means that the gears act as bigger multipliers and traction would be kicking in more frequently to control that power on the ground on lower gears, but in higher gears it may benefit...

Personally I would stick with a 5speed box
