Title: Loose engine mount...?
Post by: delirical on 21 March 2011, 08:47
So accelerating away in the lower gears there is an initial shudder and again when changing gear which definitly feels like a loose engine mount as i had the same issue a couple of months ago. It was the front mount which was tightened up and locktight applied.Which resolved the issue. i checked it yesterday and it is solid... :undecided:
Any pics for location of the other mounts? I'm not sure why these appear to be coming loose?
Car as per sig.
Thanks in advance.

Grab the engine and shake it to see if it's loose. Could also be a dodgy clutch, try changing up a gear without using the clutch and see if it still judders.

Thanks mate, tried grabbing the engine but no obvious movement.

Also tried putting in 1st and rocking the car back and forth but hard to tell.

I'm almost certain its a loose mount as the symptom is identical as the previous, i have a feeling its the gearbox to engine mount as slight resistance in gearbox when selecting reverse.
Any advise or pics to show what else it could be would be great.

This hapened to mine, I changed front mount an all was ok, About a week later when i change gear or let it roll in gear then put foot down it jolts,
Put handbrake on with bonnet up an get someone 2 bring it 2 the bite an you will see the gear box mounting has probably gone, Its at the back on the right as you look at it,

When you say 'gone' do you think it will need replacing or just tightening?

if it does the above it'll want replacing. not too bad to do the job, but quite fiddly. undo top bolt and jack engine up, then remove the alloy bracket that sits on it which means a fair bit of the gear linkage needs to come off, then you need to take out the 3 bolts thru the diff housing. see my gear linkage faq it has a short note on it and the bolts circled in one of the pics

trouble is i dont really have any free time any more, too busy making conversion looms!

its easy job, anyone who know 1 end of a spanner from another can do it.  if you could redo your own gear linkage bushes then doing a mount swap wont be any more difficult ;)

engine conversion looms! coming out me ears at the moment. mostly mk1/2 abf looms, but I've done a load of mk1/2 1.8t looms, sent out a mk3 1.8t and mk2 r32 loom out the other week. next one in the list is convert a early mk1 entire car loom to later polo 1.4 16v stuff! that one gonna be fun

drop me a pm chap and i'll give you my mobile number, just in case you get stuck :)

main thing to be careful of is pick somewhere secure to jack up the box. if it slips and your fingers are in the wrong place it could end badly!  put some wheels under the sump or something so if it does fall it wont have your fingers off.

try to crack loose the bolts you need while the box is sat on its mount still too, oh and pop the header tank off its mount and chuck round the front of the engine. makes it way easier to get to the mount bolts. don't have to touch the hoses, just pop it off and sit round the front of the engine while you're working. hope that helps!

Thanks for the advise mate, im just slightly concerned as i only have standard jacks as apposed to trolley and ive just found out my local car nut mate is in liverpool this weekend so cant use his.
+ i am not sure which mount i need, rear gearbox mount i guess, although there is a chance it could be the rear engine mount? Im guessing i would need to go for the G60 as apposed to GTI
Sorry i must sound like a right noob

Yup but its sorted now.

Friday eve i got home from work, jacked her up and got a torch to see what the hell was going on.

Basically there were NO bolts in the bottom of the subframe  :lipsrsealed: i couldnt believe it!

Tom came round with a bag of bolts and the first two we tried happened to the correct ones, so umm job done! Thanks peeps! I feel like a right idiot that i didnt even check underneath before posting  :embarassed:

If you mean subframe to shell you mustve had some in.. I had one come loose months after eng conv, and the car felt quite dodgey, as if it was going to crash and fall apart on corners! Wasn't until I saw about 8 whole turns of thread showing on 1 bolt that I realised. That was days later, after wondering what it was, and still thrashing it a bit. Moral of the story is if it feels dodgey-it probably is dodgey..get straight under for an inspection!!

it might worth lock tighting the bolts, ive heard the extra vibrations from the solid front engine mount can vibrate bolts loose, there definatly was bolts fitted before by the way

Post by: delirical on 05 April 2011, 08:56
Haha!! yea no worries mate i know there were bolts fitted.

You are right about them vibrating loose though as it happened to the top bolt in the front engine mount a couple of months ago, that was tightened back up with locktight.

Ive fitted new bottom bolts with gripping washers so that should do the trick.
