Title: Who has a Toad Ai606 fitted to their mk2?
Post by: jmsheahan on 20 March 2011, 22:00
I've been looking at alarms for a little while and the Toad Ai606 seems like a good buy. However, who actually has one fitted to their Mk2 Golf? Couple of quick questions:

1 - What happens if you are working on the car/disconnect the battery etc? Does all hell break loose or can you disable the alarm until you've finished tinkering?
2 - My car is parked up for a while sometimes which means I disconnect the battery to stop it going flat. Will this affect the alarm programming at all?
3 - How much butchering of the original loom is required?

Sorry if these are obvious questions

Cheers!

i have a lesser (but still current) TOAD fitted and its fine with the battery being disconnected  the longest i left mine diconnected was 12 hours or so and it caused no issues.

I have one fitted and it re-activates fine for long periods with disconnected battery, 6 months has been the longest.

Anti hijacking feature use to catch me out when I first had it fitted.  Quite easily lock the keys in the car if you are not carefully, though you can probably turn off the feature.

Good to know, cheers guys.

So if you are working on the car do you just disconnect the battery? Auto-rearm sounds a pain in the arse, just want an alarm for when it's parked in, shall we say 'unfriendly' places.

Can you use the original vacuum pump central locking with a TOAD?

yes as mine has some kind of solenoid screwed inside the door to work the OE actuator on the drivers side  the OE actuator just acts as if you were turning the key in the drivers door.

The alarm only sounds if you pull the battery when its armed (it thinks its been cut/tampered with) if you unarm/ unlock before you disconnect it will stay off..there is a fitting guide on clubgti as well..buy one for a 1er new off ebay and fit yourself. Don't pay the extra 200 for someone to do it and give you a cert, it'll take years in discounts before its paid for itself..I chucked rclick solenoids in my doors, as I had no c/locking, but it can work with the original pump if you look into the fitting guide..pukka alarms, loadsa features, jus need a tilt sensor to go on to protect the rims now..

Good to know, thank you

I'd have to get someone to fit it for me to be honest - wiring and electrics are not strengths of mine.

trouble is a lot of alarm fitters will just twist the wires together  :lipsrsealed:

To be fair, I did an engine conversion, and did all the central locking, elec windows, alarm etc at the same time, with dash out and car half stripped, and was familiar with all the mk2 wiring at the time. Oh and I'm an electrician by trade so I suppose that helped!

Nah, in essex.. To be fair I haven't got that sort of time for someone elses car! didn't even like doing it on my own, but as it was stripped and had no engine for a couple o weeks I went to town on the electrics everytime the engine progress was halted.
