Help? Ive just got hold of a 1989 gti golf, the only problem is that the speedometer has started making a ticking noise as the car moves along. I think its just the main cable at the rear? Any ideas how to get at it ?and sort it.Please tell me it doesnt need real surgery? ? Cheers.

Sounds as though you are right. Takes a bit of time taking the front of the dash off (stering wheel as well if you can), gently remove and unplug all the switches and radio to expose the mounting screws. (This is all in Haynes if you get bored reading!!). Having done that the front panel comes off pretty easily.
Easiest way I have found to check the cable mount is to reach around from the left behind the bare metal support (you will see what I mean) and get your hand right in. Hope you're not too fussy about your knuckles.....! Give the cable a gentle push towards you and shouild click back on. If it doesn't, the plastic retaining clip may be worn, so it will be time for a replacement. Also readily available as a complete unit either from VAG/GSF etc or scrappy.
All in all this is not a difficult job- just a little time consuming if you don't have a decent power driver. Make sure you remember to plug all your switches back in!
