Hi I have a 99 Golf Gti T 20v recently the water temp gauge is climing higher and higher and the car is displaying "Stop", "check coolant" on the dash. I have checked and the water levels are fine! does anyone know what this might be!
-
temp gauge sender unit faulty???
-
i'll bet you ?1 its the water pump knackered
-
when i drive fast it does it pretty fast when i slow down the temp goes down!
The radiator fans come on if i turn the aircon on but sont seem to when the car is hot!
I dunno if that makes sence!

Hi there,
I had a similar problem on mine, in my car the fuse holder on top of the battery which houses the fuse for the radiater fan had melted. The fuse is one of the 30 amp ones. My radiater fan never kicked in before only came on when a/c was on. The fuseholder cost me ?35 an engine has not overheated yet. Hope it gets sorted.?

Interesting, not heard that one before ! Worth checking that first mate it'll be a whole lot cheaper than replacing a water pump.
-
the fans will come on if the aircon is turned on.they run constant untill you turn it off.i would agree it's either the temp sender unit or the waterpump
-
Let it tickover and see if the fans come on.Usally if the propellor is loose on the water pump it works OK on tickover but not under load.Have you got any water flowing through the top pipe on the expansion bottle? This doesn`t usally flow when the pumps playing up.

Thanks for all the input guys, ill check all this stuff out when i get in tonight and ill let ya know the outcome, though i did check the 3 fuses in the battery holder and they looked ok!
Thanks again!

I'd say waterpump.
LEave the car to cool for about an hour, put the heater in the "off" position and on cold.
let car idle, now grab the top hose that goes to the radiator, as the temperature increases you should feel the pipe get warm, you should be able to feel the coolant go through the pipe. Try squeezing the pipe and then you should be able to feel a bit better.
If you cant feel the coolant going round then its the waterpump.

ok thanks ill try that when the car is cool, i have noticed that the fan is coming on its seems like when we are stationary i here it (maybe cos itsa quiet) also when im stationary the air blown is cold even when the heater on when im driving the air is really hot that come out!!!

Hi Guys
Thanks for all ya help, just got it fixed, it was the Water Pump i hope topher dont want his £1
Im broke paying out for it!
-
Ouch, glad you got it fixed.. not the best outcome (sometimes i hate being right).
Do you know if they replaced it with the uprated pump that has metal impellors, rather than the plastic sh!te that breaks up and fails (as you discovered) ?

You're just trying to worry him now, Toph!
