Title: Chuffed to bits.
Post by: gizzywizzy on 20 March 2011, 13:42
Just returned from a week away in cumbria, filled the tank up the night before we left and set the trip computer, so for the week I got 379 miles from my full tank and average consumption was 38.3.

I feel at long last the car has settled into itself and is finally delivering some good figures - all good when the cost of fuel is so high.  Managed to get fuel at 129.9 at Asda in Kendal, it's 132.9 here at home.

How's everyone else doing with their fuel consumption and miles to the gallon etc.

I only do urban miles so get average of 24 mpg.  I also use Tesco Momentum so I spend £1.38 a litre

Recently did a trip to Cornwall and returned low thirties MPG in mixed driving, no super fast stuff and no heroics (4 up with luggage much of the time).

Literally got back an hour or so ago from a trip going from Devon to the West Mids and back again, all motorway, light to medium traffic, 3 up and not much luggage as only an overnight stay. Going up it was 34.4mpg average and that included needing to get a bit of a move on as we had a table booked! My old mk5 would have done that trip with around 31-32 mpg showing at best.
Coming back this morning I decided as we were in absolutely no rush that I'd stick to the limit all the way and averaged 66mph on the computer for the trip; 36.4 on the trip computer for the return leg of the journey.
So in my fully considered scientific conclusion, there's only 2 mpg to be gained by being a goody two shoes, I frequently got baulked by traffic whilst sticking to the speed limit and the journey was boring as hell coming back - so enjoy your GTIs folks and drive them like you stole them* the journey up was much more enjoyable...... :smug:

* Disclaimer: I'm an idiot and should be ignored at all times so don't come crying to me if you get done for speeding.....

PS. Are you always on holiday Amanda?

Fantastic, that's only 0.4mpg short of the official combined figure.

I'd love to try that fuel. But there aren't any Tesco petrol stations/supermarkets that have it on the shelves near me. So I just use supermarket unleaded. That will be a sacrilegious comment to some I know, but I have used the car on V-Power for a time and noticed no difference apart from 10p a litre.
Fantastic, that's only 0.4mpg short of the official combined figure.
It's a bit worrying to know that there are people who know what the published MPG figures are for their car.

My total average over the past 2700 mile is 31.8mpg and thats been all commuter trips of 16 miles each way were theres 33 sets of traffic/crossing lights. The commute in the morning is not too bad as its before the main rush hour so 99% of the time im moving were as the return trip is in the main rush hour traffic which distroys my average mpg as im sitting for ages.
My previous commuting TDI average was +11mpg more over a 16,000 2 year period i used it for the exact same trips.
EDIT: Just done the calculations for my total average milage a year, (yes im borred and was curious to see how much this had changed since the last time i worked it out), if i used the mk6 exclusivly all year round, compared to the TDI i was using the mk6 in fuel only would cost me £315.69 a year more.
That may sound alot to some until you think that is less than 90p a day so less than a couple of cans of pop or cups of tea a day. I can live with that difference.

My cars a manual one, i noticed with the mk5's i drove i got ~10% more mpg out the manual on average compared to the DSG version, i don't know if the mk6 has a similar difference.

Theres an intersting post on the R forum about mpg

Whats wrong with Cumbria? My brother lives in windermere and i go up every chance i get! I'm confused by some of the low mpg figures for motorway driving, on the trip from my house to Windermere i average about 43 ish mpg doing about 75 ish all the way on a good day, i only live about a mile from the motorway so perhaps it's something to do with that?

Half my journey of 7 miles each way involves trolling up and down the Marylebone Road, London which suffers from major constant constipation. My average speed on this vile stretch of over used tarmac is around 6 mph with an average consumption of 9 mpg!
You know what, I don't care as otherwise I'll have a stroke. However, the average for the day is around 25 mpg which is fine and delights me.
I serenely drive my smooth and quiet GTI whilst listening to and enjoying a fabulous sound system and all seems well with the world for me.  :smug:

Just a bit quite out here for my liking and the nightlife is rubbish prefer the city but thats just me!  :smug:

It wasnt all motorway for me from whitehaven its about an hours drive on single carriageway roads so the figures drop for that part then slowly increase on the motorway, and im a little heavy footed every now and then when i get bored

Since Iam now driving with much more attention being paid to the legal limit, I'm getting 35ish MPG average on longer runs, with my mixed urban/dual carridgeway rund still showing in the 30s.
I'm impressed really.

I travelled from Whitby to Windermere through the Dales on some considerably winding roads so getting the figures I was getting pleased the pants off me.

"quick" I get 45 MPG
"with the traffic" I get 55 MPG
"taking it easy" I get 65 MPG
If I reset the counter once on the motorway and take it easy @ 58 mph I can get 70+ MPG

Overall I average 51.7 MPG but it does get a good run every day 35 miles each way and I'm close (ish) to the motorways, I normally drive a mixture of quick / with the traffic.

If i just watch the computer i can get similar out of our TDI170 but brim to near empty to brim again of the tank my total avarage is nowere near those figures sadly  :embarassed: I could get better figures out of our TDI130 than the newer TDI170 :embarassed:

So manual, stage 1 remap, momentum petrol (£1.37  ) & generally quick of the mark driving but mostly on B roads and the odd dual carraigeway, I get just over 300miles to the tank approx 34mpg.

I agree for a price of a couple of cups of tea or bottle of juice...it's all worth it

Ode to the GTi by Sir Cliff Richard
Words adapted by am1w

When I was young my father said
"Son I have something to say",
And what he told me I'll never forget
Until my dyin' day.
He said, "Son you are a GTi boy,
And that's the way to stay,
Son, you be a GTi boy until your dyin' day".

When I was sixteen I fell in love
With a girl as sweet as could be.
But I remember'd just in time
What my daddy said to me.
He said, "Son you are a GTi boy,
And that's the way to stay.
Son, you be a GTi boy until your dyin' day."

To help with my fuel consumption... ive placed an order for a Hyundai i10 in crystal white. 11 reg and arrives in 6 weeks.

Golfs getting a rest..staying and not selling.. Weekend fun blasts

i10 has a 450 tank range.... averages 61mpg, costs £20 a year road tax, and only £200 to insure.

Was costing me £200+  a month in fuel for the Ed30 for 800 miles. Got the i10 and its still cheaper to run both, Now £20 a week in fuel and does nearly 200 miles on that £20

Sad i know but I more or less had done what Steveis talking about but i did not buy a newish second car, one similar with the toyota 1.0 in. I have got bored over the past year driving it though and theres many times were i wished i had the power to overtake and were in the other car. So the GTI will get used more. (I have thought about buying a mk2 to replace the 1.0 car though  )
Am1W i did factor in the cost with mine and it worked out cheaper but then i had the car anyway as a stop gap because of the golfs delay back in 09. It came in handy in the winter too.

i had a £7000 cheque giving to me from a sale of property(shared with 23 other people) i was a long time member of, so the £2000 outlay, wasnt from my savings so to speak, so made sense to buy new ....

47mpg highest recorded trip. Not bad for a car that takes me from 0-60 in under 6 seconds

This thread made me think and see what i was getting driving normally (no changing when the car said so etc and a couple of blasts on the way home ) to see what i would average for my daily commute of 32miles each day since this thread was posted.

After the morning 16mile trip. Averaged is quite high, (see below)
On the way home i hit lots of traffic in main rush hour in a main city so it takes twice as long to get home and the average drops to ~28mpg on the 16 mile home trip.
