Title: HELP Door trim strips held on by? Any ETKA or ELSAwin info/workshop repair info?
Post by: Snoopy on 17 March 2011, 12:52
The decorative trim strips on the door panels next to the door release handle how are they held on?

Are they clipped and sticky taped?

As some of you may know mine rattle. I have been to the dealers and they want to book the car in for two days to 'glue' them on.
This i think is not a good idea,  :undecided: (Unless its like that from the factory) as if i damage one or a passenger does removing the seatbelt for example. It meens a complete new door panel! rather than just a new decorative trim strip..

I know they are not ment to rattle as the ones in the car at the dealers showroom does not and my mates TDI ones do not. So im trying to find out why mine do!

This is what i gave to the dealer.

RATTLES on VW Golf GTI ##10###.

Front passenger door panel rattle.
The cause can be shown by pressing on the decorative trim strips or above or below it next to the join with the door release pull this causes the panel to tick/crack. This panel moves when on the road causing a creak/rattle.
This problem also affects the front drivers door and the rear passenger side door to a much lesser degree but all of them cause rattles to be heard out on the road.

This is a video of what the dealer would have heard and seen

Can anyone with ETKA, ElseWin, Workshop info, Work at a VW dealer,
know of links to maybe German or American forums were they have changed these help and let me know how these are held on please.

Thanks for any help
Geoff.

As far as I know they are plastic welded in place from the rear of the strips.

My ELSA says they're welded on and can't be removed / replaced seperately.

I guess thats why they are saying they will have to glue something and so need the car for 2 days.

Is it definately the trim pieces snoops? It looks like your pushing the door panel itself in your video? Could it be the clips not located properly?

I had another look today before reading this and came to a similar thought too.
After comparing the decorative trim movement with my mates 09 mk6 TDI that was parked next to mine in the car park my trims hardly move compared to his.
It seems my door panel itself at the top in the middle were it goes near to the window moves alot when the panel is pressed, were as his does not move at all.
This seems to be the cause of the click/tick in the video rather than the decorative trim panel.
The one door panel in my car that does not make this tick/click to some degree has no/little movement but all the rest do to some degree.

So i wonder if my door panels are seated correctly or if theres some sort of clip at the top. (I have not had mine to bits yet). Does it hook into the door edge like older car door panels do for example and its simple been misfitted i wonder?

you've most likely already seen this pic snoops from SteveP "how to" but it may shed some light on what could be the cause behind the door card, looks like there is only one clip at the top but do you think those round sticky back things are spacers? maybe yours are missing?

I don't know  :undecided:
I wonder whats stopping that middle bit from moving towards the window on my rear drivers door but not on the other 3 doors :undecided:
Something must do. I thought it must hang on a U on that edge were the window is, were the rubber is on Steves Photo like old door panels designes use to but i guess not. :undecided:

ETKA lists the trim pieces and a clamping washer (part 17 below) as separate items.

It also mentions a parts bulletin ref 8-179 but I don't have access to this.

Thanks Steve,

I also found this last night which the carbon fibre addicts maybe interested in for all the trims.
It shows how the door decorative trims are held on too.
