Title: DIY Polyurethane Engine Mounts
Post by: spaced4130 on 15 March 2011, 22:00
Has anyone on the this forum ever experimented with making diy polyurethane engine mounts. There is a bit of information about it here:-

http://www.superhonda.com/forum/f94/diy-homemade-polyurethane-engine-mounts-204274/ (http://www.superhonda.com/forum/f94/diy-homemade-polyurethane-engine-mounts-204274/)

I'm tempted to maybe give it a go as my mounts are shagged and need replacing anyway. What do you guys reckon?

Hmm casting his own Polyurethane... interesting, but pretty crazy. Got to be pretty careful with the mould and PU grade selection, you also want to make sure you get no air pockets. Plus the isocyanate can cause a pretty severe asthma attack.

Also the shrinkage they talk about is during the casting process.

so do you cut out the old rubber and cast a new one or just fill around old rubber??

From the pictures posted it looks like he got new engine mounts and just cast PU around the existing rubber.
If you made a little jig to centralise the bush there would be nothing stopping you cutting out the rubber and doing a full cast.

On saying that, as unlikely as it is to happen i'd like the rubber supports there just incase the PU cracked/came off the rubber or some equally disastarous outcome

i just used masking tape to stop it coming out the bottom then filled the gaps between the rubber

worth it ?

it was for me cos the mount was shagged and it was over 100 quid for a new one! lol

but the mk4 wishbone bushes are worth doing, stops the knacking up in the future

i was actually looking at this a good few months back.. if you take your OEM mounts off you can split them with a chisel.. (only do this with an old set as you wont be able to reuse them because the oil inside them will leak out).
you can buy poly 2 part resins to make them but you need to make silicone moulds too.. it can get quite expensive so youre probably better off buying some off the shelf.

I'm going to replace my mounts with stock mounts this weekend then do a bit of experimenting with my old ones, Ill let you all know how I get on with it.

Getting the stock mounts from VW is pretty pricey and yeah people are right that for not much more you can get THS ones but GSF seem to be the cheapest place to get stocks mounts.

There £57.50 + VAT for both left and right, Unless anyone knows a cheaper place to get them then let me know. Im just going to replace the bushes on the done bone.
