If you want rattle cans, halfords should be able to mix it up for you, and put it in an aerosol, don't forget to have your paint code at the ready
Failing that, your local motor factors, should be able to do the same..

out of interest, my car was made to look like a gti in the early 1990s its actually a driver, is there any way to tell if the color is OEM i have an old recipt that states it was sprayed ROYAL BLUE (LA5U) but was it a respray from another color as its only a driver (1990) so im not sure it would have came in royal blue. although it could have been a repair job.

its funny i have the origanal grey folder with all sorts of docs, includung the vag brackdown recovery and other bits from the 1990s vw dealer :) pointless but fun

There should be sticker on the inside of the boot that's got loads of codes printed on it.
The paint codeshould be on there.

^^^ printed VIN sticker is no longer relevant as the car has had a colour change..

Your best bet in that case, would to take the car to a motor factor/paint supplier and confirm that the code you have, is for that colour..

Depends if it was a full respray, just the outside or a repair spray like he said.
Unless drivers never came in royal blue, that is!

LA5U is royal blue metalic, and yeah tyou did get drivers and GLs in that colour. very nice but its pretty rare so a real b!tch to get panels for. i got my paint from VW but that was a while ago so unsure if they still do it

VW don't do Royal Blue in cans any more.

Paints4U is a good bet - I got some from there for my bumper and it was a good match.

there are three shades to la5u royal blue so get them to check your shade with the colour swabs not just from the code.

i might need a new coolant bottle cap and a new seat subframe for the driver as what ever i do it will not shift! i am about to wrap my car in a nice powder blue as it happens but before i do that im fixing some rust on the rear wheel arch. would prefer to fix that first

thanks for the replys

He's saying that there are 3 differing shades of that particular colour! whether the car is brand new, or 20years old, 3 different shades came out the factory, and was usually down to VW themselves swapping paint manufacturers over the production run, generally speaking, on something like Royal blue, there will be a light shade, a dark shade, and a red shade...

Just go to any autospray people and they will colour match for you and mix. It costs a little more but is correct

At a Motor factors, the paint would be mixed from scratch, they can mix any shade, that they have a formulation for... whoever mixes the paint will check the colour of the car, with the relevant colour charts, and make a decision to pic the closest shade, always get them to match the paint to the area of car that is to be painted, as the rest of the car may be off colour!

Most decent painters, would always pic the No1 shade, that is usually the light shade to re spray a car, and not necessarily the shade that left the factory! this is for ease, incase the car was damaged at a later date, and returned for repairs, the painter could establish the new colour with ease, rather than guess work..

ebayed the paint, its the only one on there, packaged with lacquer and i honestly can say the match is so good that i coldnt remember what i had repaired, shame i cant say that for the o/s rear wheel arch, i just removed the trim and found lots of lovely rust that will need replacing, and i have no welder any-more so its going to have to go to a repair shop.
