Title: Getting MPH on the display
Post by: ed2708 on 15 March 2011, 12:03
Good Afternoon

my car was being serviced yesterday and i asked the dealer to change the digital display from kph to mph. they say its impossible but having searched i see it is possible but cant find any info on how its done. does it need vagcom and will a dealer have it? can someone let me have instructions i can pass to the dealer?

thanks

Ed

Ed,

Doubt the dealer will do it. I believe its part of EU law for the car to display mph and kph but someone kind enough on here should be able to do it for you :)

You set the instruments to "rest o the world" using vag com, then you can have the large MPH

so if i just tell the dealer to set it to rest of the world on vagcom they will know what to do then? sounds too easy

Sounds easy to us, maybe not so for the trained monkeys at VW :)

VW will either:

A. Do it (3% chance)
B. Report you to the police for some war crime or something as they'll have no clue what you mean (97% chance)

And yes, it really is that easy to do plus you get the bonus of being able to choose kmh in the small section of the fuel computer OR the far more useful external temp

I don't get why you would want a digital readout in mph as well as the big round dial.

What are you going to do if you drive in Europe? It'd be a bit of a faff having to get it changed back to kph again.

No, not really you click from temp to KPH in the DIS

If you mean me, I said it would be a pain to go back from mph to kph when driving abroad. From what I can see, you get the external temp showing whether you have mph or kph displayed.

Out of interest (as I don't get my Mk6 for another 3 weeks) in which section of the DIS is the trip computer displayed. Is it where the mpk/kph is, or the external temp?

When you have the standard UK car you only get the temp when you have the fuel computer on which is a pain in the a55 in winter for expample, otherwise the area where you get the temp shows your speed in KMH.

When you have selected the "rest of the world" settings for the clocks you can select to have KMH or TEMP in the small section of the display

That's a useful feature me thinks - must put it on the "to code" list

Its just a radial button you select in the MFD. No need to use Vagcom again. 2 second job. And like Doc says, you now have the temp displayed on all screens of the MFD rather than a wasted KPH shown in all screens.
The way it should be.

Ok, so I am confused!

To get the screen to display like the previous poster with temp at the bottom and large MPH in the centre, do you require a VAG COM or can it be done through the MFD's menus?

Nice one.

Does the board have a 'shared' VAG COM or anything like that? Would anybody be up for sharing one?

Does anyone know or have VAG COM in the Manchester/Cheshire area as would like to change current km to mph on the digital display, thanks

is this possible on the red dot matrix, ie the mk5 doc?

Mines booked in for coding the rns 510 in the morning. Also staging and hopefully to allow me to access the set up on rns 510 so I can update maps/firmware(sounds like a challenge in itself!).
Found a local VW speacialist to do it for £35+the dreaded.
Wish me luck.
Then a nice drive up to Geordi-land for the weekend!

Make sure that " Alt. speed dis." is unticked in the main settings menu to get the large MPH display.

As above.

No idea why your Nav has lost it's voice

My Nav lost its voice once too.  I posted messages on here and got some suggestions - but none fixed it.
In the end, I re-loaded on the firmware disk which fixed it.

I don't know what caused it.  Very odd!

I'll try getting the latest firmware version. Is there any posts to help with this? I havent read the instruction for the RNS 510 yet but the button on the top right (symbol of speaker and info) this doesnt do anything.

Its voice recognition. You press it then after the bleep say what you want to control / change.

Do you need a retro mic or is this standard? I didnt opt for the phone kit if this makes a difference.
Just downloaded the firmware upgrade but may leave while tomorrow now - Technical stuff n lager dont mix!

You need a mic... either fitted with the standard VW hands free kit, or you can fit a mic specific for this job.
I adapted my Fiscon kit to work with it, but then it gave me poor call quality.
I think the voice control is a gimmick anyway - as after you've used it for a couple of days you'll never use it again!
Without the voice control enabled, the button you're speaking about on the RNS will simply repeat the last instruction from the SatNav lady.

[/quote]Ahh, I think there were a tick box on VCDS to enable voice control. Maybe not ticking this could have caused the NAV to stop talking too??? I dont even get a bleep when pressing the voice button.
