As title really,my car is having a full respray at the end of the month and I'm wondering about how best to polish it when I get it back.
My plan was to polish the crap out of it and then wax it.
Mainly to make it extra shiney and also to protect it.
It is brilliant black metallic painted in 2 pack if it makes a difference.
Is there a certain amount of time I have to wait before I can polish it?
I can make an angle grinder talk when it comes to steel, but I've not used one for polishing so would ratherdo it by hand.
If anyone can shed some light I'd be very greatfull.

i'd leave it a month or so before breaking out the polishing gear myself especially if its not been in an oven to cure
sure the pro's will come up with better advice
and if you are gonna do it sooner, make sure its bodyshop safe polish (which i think means its ok to use after painting - not sure about this mind)
-
Oh ok,cheers for that.
The car will deffo be in an oven as it is being done by a bloody good body shop, gutted i have to wait a month as it was gunna be on the drive for just over a month before it got driven. Was looking forward to polishing the crap out of it while it was sat there
-
You will be fine polishing it, but do not add any protection (wax/sealant) for a month or so, these can sometimes stop the paint from hardening completely.
-
Great stuff,thanks for that.
Is there something you could recommend, polish wise for a frshly painted black car?Ive always used Autoglym but i recently got some Meguiars Tech wax and thought it was pretty good.
Something sub £30?
Thanks very much.
-
Don't use the Tech wax for a month or so. A polish for a freshly painted car, i'd go with these:
http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=526&idcategory=75
and
http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=612&idcategory=75
The paint should be in fairly good condition anyway and may just need a bit of shine added, it shouldn't have any swirls in, and Meg's 205 is a fantastic finishing polish.
-
Thanks for that, just ordered them now,i think i will buy a few bits each month and get my detailing kit together with your advice if thats ok?
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the order.
Ask any advice you need, i'll also include a few brochures in with your order, the Meg's one has some great advice in.
I'm always more than happy to offer advice or answer any questions I can, if I can't answer them, there are a few other good and very knowledgable lads on here who always offer help too
-
Outstanding, thanks very much for your help
Will be using you again for sure
-
Just recieved my parcel today.Great service, thanks very much Chris.
The info you sent was very handy too thanks.
I have a couple of questions,on the back of the bottle i recieved it tells me to machine polish,i didnt really want to do this so will i be able to just apply with the sponge you suggested and wipe with some micro fibre cloths?
Also when it comes to washing the car, could you suggest a good shampoo(again for freshly painted black cars) i have Meguiars NXT http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=117&idcategory=3 will this be ok or can you suggest a better one?
Thanks again.

Any advice on the shampoo lads?
-
zaino z7 is a nice shampoo,
Britemax cleanmax is another
dodojuice born to be mild is good for regular washing.
dodojuice sourpower
dodojuice basics of bling shampoo is good and performs very well.
durogloss 901 is another good one
valet pro poseidons carnauba wash is very goody for regular use.
take your pick mate they are all good, i have all of the listed above.
-
Thanks very much for that.
Would i be right in thinking if i was to get a high foamy/thick type shampoo it would help protecting my new respray?
Im just frightened to death of scratching it! :embarassed:
-
Not really, as long as you buy a good quality shampoo you will be fine. Any of the above Dan has mentioned are great. Dodo Juice Born to be Mild is my choice
-
Well if it gets yours and dans vote that will do for me!
Im currently picking a few other bits and bobs then you will have another order off me
-
Sorry to keep going on but i want to buy stuff in bulk rather than loads of daft orders.
Whats the best way to dry the car after washing?Ive always used a chamois but now im taking more on an interest in detailing there must be a new spangly fancy way of doing it?
Hairdryer?
Im quite liking the look of this?

You could do with something a bit bigger, some like:
http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=84&idcategory=16
or
http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=256&idcategory=16
-
Ooooh i never saw the big ones. Thanks Chris.
Right so if you dont mind too much id like you to look over what im planning to do after reading up.
(Bare in mind i will just use the polish i bought off you last time for a month like you advised)
Wash with Dodo Juice born to be mild with a lambs wool mitt
Dry with that spangly towel
polish with Mequiars 205(using the LC CCS PAD)
Glaze with Poor Boys Black hole(not sure what pad to use?)
Then wax with Dodo juice Supernatural.
Using whatever microfibre cloths you recommend on the site to buff off?
Does this sound ok?
Sorry to keep asking questions i just like to do the job right and do a bit of research before i tackle stuff. :embarassed:
-
Yep sounds good to me.
Pads for the Blackhole - http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=527&idcategory=75
You can also use them pads to apply the Supernatural wax. They are lovely and soft.
Microfibres - I'd probably go with the Dodo Juice Fantastic Furs or maybe the Supernatural Buffing Towels
Ask away with any other questions
Chris
-
I really appreciate your help
I have one more question and i think im done.
Can you over wax a car?
I mean once ive done all the above stuff,is there any benefit from me waxing the hell out of it 3 times a week until it goes on the road?
Or am i just being a bit anal
-
haha 3 times a week is a bit over the top
If you apply 2 layers of SN 24 hours a apart that would do you for a good 3 months easy. Nothing stopping you adding maybe one more layer a week later though. I really wouldn't go for more than 3 layers, you would just be wasting wax, it won't actually add anything as it will just be replacing what is already there.
I love the enthusiasm though
-
Aaah ok
I just wanted to see clouds and stuff if i looked into the paint and thought that might help
Would polishing it silly amounts THEN waxing help achieve this?
-
Don't over do any step. Polishing will make a huge difference to the finish, and then the glaze on top will give you a great finish
-
Wicked!
Cant wait to make a start now!
Ive currently got all plastics/exterior trim in my garage,as well the front glass,so will start harrassing you on what to use on them when the car goes to be sprayed on the 12th
Thanks again mate.
-
Looking forward to it
-
just to add, im currently seeing just over 5 months good durabilty from 2 layers of supernatural on the wifes bmw and its still beading after washing, the key is very good prep and good maintenance washing, if you slack on the prep your lsp doesnt stand a chance.
these http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=581&idcategory=11 or the yellow disc applicators are very good for applying SN.
-
Cheers Dan i will add them to the list.
Im very particular so i will do everything correctly(hence all the questions)
Not wanting to sound thick but erm what is lsp?
-
last stage protection i think, wax basicly
you forgot a sealant
jetseal 109 or poorboys exp are meant to be nice, torn between which one i'll get next
-
Sealant?what the crap is that?
-
after the black hole and before the wax,
i've got wet look mirror and its alright but seems everyone else prefers js109 or exp sealant over it
-
Is it just a wax on wax off job then?
Good grief my neighbours are gunna think im bonkers im gunna be bloody hours doing this.......CANT WAIT
-
sealants offer high uv protection and longer durabilty than carnauba wax but can lack in terms of finish which is why we use wax ontop of sealants, you dont have to as a rule but we put wax ontop to lift the gloss, and also beading.
jetseal 109 is far better the poorboys exp.
-
Ok so sealant is on the list.
Now im getting into this detailing business and im quite excited about it(does that make me sad :embarassed:)
However i read lots of reviews and saw everybody saying how good Dodo juice supernatural is.So i thought hey ho i will get some of that!
Then i saw the price and nearly choked on my sausage butty!
Im keen but not that keen!
Can you guys suggest a good wax, again for a feshly painted metallic black car that would have been painted a month.
Something sub £30 please?
Or am i being a tight arse? :undecided:
Thanks again guys.

i like my natty blue paste wax, http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=150&idcategory=9
i was gonna try this one, http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=77
or
http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=603&idcategory=9
or as a wildcard

lol no your not sad, its a good to look after something you spend alot of money on to keep running etc, ive been doing it at pro level for 16yrs and still love doing it and will be doing it till i retire.
yes supernatural is an awesome wax and dont be put off by the price because a 200ml tub will last you years, ive got a panel pot and have used it 4 times and havent really dented it, my 200ml tub ive used 6 times and again its hardly dented it, the wifs bmw comact has been wearing it for nearly 6months now and its still protecting it from 2 layers.
consider megs#16 which isnt expensive and offers good durabilty and the finish is good too.
collinite 915 is another good choice for the money.
Ok so sealant is on the list.

i have collinite 845 and i tihnk its great for a lasting wax.. not as good as my dodo light fantastic but still an awesome wax
-
i use 845 for winter protections, its a very durable wax but lacks bling due to its hybrid properties.
-
Thanks again for the replies lads.
Glad to hear I'm not a sad t*at ha ha
I have a feeling that if I buy anything else other than supernatural I'm always going to be wondering how much better it is, and will regret it.
It's just the £95 price tag that's a lol hard to swallow!
I see the little 30ml pots are about £16 or so.
Don't suppose I could get more than a panel out of that though?
Also where is the best place to store all my cleaning stuff? My garage is carpeted but not heated,am I better off leaving it invent house?or once again am I being anal and it doesn't really matter? Lol
Thanks again lads

-
panel pot should be plenty to do the cars a couple of times, get one and see if you think its worth the expenditure
keep them somewhere wherever you want, it doesnt matter too much really. avoid damp places
unless you want us to say "it MUST be kept indoors" to get it past the mrs
in which case
IT MUST BE KEPT INDOORS
-
Ooooh if a panel pot will do the car a couple of times i might get one of them, see how it goes and then buy a big pot.
As for storage,it wasnt so much a case of getting it past the missus(if only she went in one of the spare bedrooms she would find 2 pieces of glass,a rear bench seat,4 doorcards a parcel shelf and a 15"sub in a box) hence why that door is closed atm
The garage is nice and dry so i will put it on my racking in there then.
Regarding the panel pot,the tin looks quite small, how am i going to get my big mitts/cloth in that tin?
-
a panel pot of SN will do your car more than a couple of times if you apply it correctly.
£95 for supernatural? http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/Dodo_Juice_Supernatural_Wax_200ml_1.html
store your waxes in a cool place all year round and make sure the lids are on properly, polishes are fine in the garage, shampoo's and qd's are also fine in the garage.
-
Aaaaah thats betterer
I can live with £60.The one i was looking at was in some fancy wooden pot though.(it could be in a melon for all i care as long as it isnt £95)
Thats added to the list now thanks.
Good grief by the time ive got it all it will have cost me a a 5th of the price of the respray
Well worth it though if stuff is going to keep the paint looking fresh.
Another question regarding microfibre towels/cloths.How often should i wash them?I have seen usuing the search function that you should wash them on a low heat in a non bio powder and air dry.
But is this after every use?Or after a few goes?Or just as soon as it gets dirty?
-
id suggest washing your microfibres after every use, it keeps them in good condition and stops contamination being transfered.
dont use powder use the liquid tabs, some powder can remain after washing at low temps and get stuck in the cloths so liquid tabs are better tbh, and yes airdry the cloths(no tumble drying).
tip for applying SN, apply it very thin for best results and do 2 layers an hour apart.
-
Great stuff,thanks again.
I will leave it a day or two before asking how best to clean textured interior plastics and maybe cover up light scratches............
-
Ayup lads,im back.Rather than start a new thread i thought id keep this one going.
So.The car is coming back in a week and im a little scared
It wont be going anywhere on the roads for at least a month and it will be sat on the drive. However with all this birch pollen and stuff thats going about im a little worried.
As discussed previous in the thread im not going to be able to wax it for a month.(my bodyshop guy says 2 weeks as it will be baked for a long time) so i shall happy medium it and leave it 3 weeks.
Ive got pretty much all of the gear you lads have suggested. However ive just thought,we said im allowed to polish and glaze it but not wax or seal it for a few weeks.
If i apply my polish and glaze like im planning too, then the car gets covered in that smeg pollen, when i wash the car(DJ BTBM)<<<see im even abbreviating like a pro ;) will the shampoo strip all my hard worked in polish requiring me to apply it again?
Am i better off not polishing it and just washing it every few days until im allowed to do the lot in one go?
Thanks again lads.I will post pictures when i get it done so you can tell me if ive gone wrong
-
me personally i wouldnt bother doing anything till atleast 3 weeks.. then do whatever floats ya boat
-
Good grief that will be torture!
A freshly painted car on the drive getting dirty..... I may cry a little :(
