Title: What's your next buy?
Post by: T_J_G on 13 March 2011, 17:20
What's next for your kit bag.

I want flash triggers and a 70-300mm lense.

Post by: shepgti on 13 March 2011, 17:21
new body for me

or maybe a 10-20 lense

a 10-20  would be nice but out of my budget. A reflector is likely to be my next purchase.

Probably the kit bag itself lol

Or a beginners guide / photography course.

probably the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G or a professional 27" screen
Title: Re: What's your next buy?

Currently on the look out for a few things,
70-200/300mm lens - definately s/h
Polariser for my 50mm prime - should be cheap enough for a 49mm thread
Flash Gun, probably just a cheap one or secondhand
A new kit bag, perhaps decent rucksack/shoulder bag combo that can hold more that just camera bits (as I am usually out with the family and need supplies of snacks/drinks and things).

Hoping to get everything except the flash before going on holiday in June.

just get a wide-angle prime or a lens baby
Title: Re: What's your next buy?

I have a 14mm 2.8 sigma prime lens, add that to the 20d and you are looking at around 3lb in weight. Plus when you add into the 1.6x sensor you're really looking at 22.4mm lens. not that wide.

or if they weren't so damn expensive the hasselblad xpan II would be a great little panoramic camera.

Unless you have a full frame dslr, it's really tricky to do good landscape pics because of the 1.6x multiplier effect.

I'd have to disagree (sort of), whilst 14mm is wide, it's not that wide, I've got a 10.5mm rectangular fish eye (16mm on FX) which I use for panorama's / landscape, you can get a 10mm-24mm for less than £600 (branded and less for sigma / tamron) weight isn't really and issue as a landscape photographer with be carrying a tripod anyway so will make little difference.  then you've got the option for stitching shots to get a wider view.

It's not tricky, it's just expensive lol

Post by: shepgti on 23 March 2011, 09:43
i agree decent landscape shots can be taken on a crop sensor
Title: Re: What's your next buy?
Post by: Horney on 23 March 2011, 10:20
I also agree, I've seen some great landscapes shot with a crop senser and kit 18-55. That said I'm considering buying a 10-20mm Sigma later in the year as I have a few paid gigs to shoot that it will be useful for and the payments will cover the cost of the lens.

Well just ordered the above. Should be with me Sat morning.

I shall pass my old Sigma 55-200m F4/5.6 to the wife as she only has the kit lens for her 400D.

Urrggghhh I ordered a Nikon lens by mistake somehow. What a thingy. Gotta return it to amazon now and I was looking forward to using it this weekend. Might just splurge out and buy it in jessops instead as I can't be faffed to wait for it all to be refunded.

Not bad for a first attempt. It's dead hard to get the focus right as it just takes a tiny movement like breathing to throw it all out. Much more practice required.

Errrrr...

If you mean a track system to wind the camera along like this (http://dynamicperception.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=16&products_id=26&zenid=f224817adcb7d89c371e2c87c4f1fdd6), yes maybe later.

This is the timer thingamy  (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Timer-Remote-switch-Pentax-RS-60E3/dp/B001C6JYSA/ref=pd_cp_ce_3)- bought cos it was cheap.  Someone tell it it won't do what I'm thinking of now.

This is what piqued my interest in doing this: http://www.vimeo.com/22439234?ab

Obviously I'm not expecting anything like that, but it's something new to try and you've got to love that sort of thing.  Already got a number of projects to try out with it.

the one thing i will suggest dh is finding a decent bit of software to put it together as in my experience taking the shots was the easy bit.

Well I'll be starting with Premier Pro and if that fails I'll be upgrading my Quicktime to Pro - apparently it'll nail the shots all together from sequentially numbered images.

If I'm still failing, I have a mate who's done several, so I'll tap him up

yeah any sort of rail system / rig to move the camera between shots, the most interesting time lapse videos I've seen are shot from moving rigs, and you can knock one up on the cheap.

What uses would you suggest for a sigma 10-20mm other than landscapes. Do you think it would be anygood for cars?

landscapes, interior shots with a small working distance, wide angle lenses usually have a close working distance so can be good for close up work (esp when combined with the wide angle of view).  Could be good for car work as you won't need to be too far back, but be-aware that anything that wide will have noticeable barrel distortion (normally correctable) although sometimes distortion can add to the image.
Title: Re: What's your next buy?
Post by: Diamond Hell on 10 May 2011, 22:02
10-20mm lenses are good for just about anything (except anything requiring a long zoom, obviously).

They add instant epic to most photos (as well as that distortion).

Went into the local narcotics resale unit today aka the local camera shop.

There's a second hand TS-E 24mm for £699.  The guy's selling up because he's retired.

I can easily resist the 200mm super-fandango L-series lens for £1999, but I'm going to struggle with the TS-E, although the price needs chipping down a bit.

Interesting move.
Talking to a pro photographer friend of mine, he says that a lot of people fall into the trap of believing the photos from Canons are better, because they appear warmer, but this is apparently because Canons apply a little processing to the image when you take it, whereas the Nikons just capture the image exactly as it is, which supposedly is a better raw form to work with.

Personally I didn't like the one Nikon (D60) I tried out, but haven't played with Canons enough to compare as I use Sony and like them.
Canon certainly have the edge when it comes to video, you don't hear of anyone shooting HD video on Nikons, but Canons have been used widely right across the media from BBC documentaries to low budget films.

Just picked up another lens.
A Tamron 28-200 f3.8-5.6

Basically I got it for walkabout and zoom purposes. With a range like that it can lend itself to quite a bit.
It's an older lens, but the AF is fast and the glass is all good and at £29 it would be rude not to.

Also I'm gonna take my film SLR body on holiday along with my DSLR so having an older full frame lens is all good. Planning to shoot on some slide film for cross-processing and also want to try some film/DSLR comparison shots.

Bought a flashgun on ebay the other day, Sigma EF530 DG ST. Bargain for £40. Hoping it arrives before I got away on Saturday afternoon

Also looking at getting a replacement 50mm f1.8 prime because sand has screwed up the focussing on my Sony one.

Then, if I can spare the cash, I'm looking for a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (constant) as an upgrade for my kit lens. Hopefully I can find one closer to the £200 mark, but they're not very common for Sony Alpha.

AS I've just got my 70-200 f4 USM L, I bought a second flashgun (YN-460 II) for off camera duty.

Next up may be a new body (7D) or a nice lense to cover the wider angles. Haven't really looked into this yet though.

Next up may be a new body (7D) or a nice lense to cover the wider angles. Haven't really looked into this yet though.

Maybe  this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-17-40-4-0-USM-Lens/dp/B0000C4GAM/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1316178047&sr=8-12)

17 on a crop isn't really that wide, i'd probably spend a little more and get;

True, 17 on a crop isn't that wide, but also f4 at 17mm isn't that low, you'd find yourself resorting to high ISOs a lot.. And at the other end, you'd probably find that 40mm is too short.
My brother has the 17-55 f2.8 Ridg suggests, it's lovely. It's got enough length for an all-round walkabout lens, but has a low enough f-stop to get lovely depth of field. He picked his up for about £600 on ebay.
This is the best priced one on at the moment thats not in Hong Kong..

Would love that 10-22 canon. However I think I really need a decent walkabout lens 18mm+, and then a seperate 10-20mm

Got a rough idea on price DH? Don't think I'm in a position to purchase but you never know...

I don't use my 18-55mm at all these days, if I'm honest.  The wide angle + 50mm replace it for me.

I'll find out details on the Sigma and let you know in due course.

This last month has been somewhat big in terms of photography associated purchases; bought my first DSLR

:. S/H Canon D60 body (low actuations)
:. Canon 75-300mm USM lens (as new)
:. Canon 35-80mm lens (cheap but lightweight)
:. Sigma 28-300mm lens (requires refurbishment; growth inside lens, but it was free)
:. Tripod
:. Remote shutter release
:. Spare battery pack
:. Lovely new camera backpack, KATA DR465i (highly recommended, will hold body w/lens, plus 4 further lenses in lower section; upper section for accessories, food, rain jacket etc)

Now all I need is a good prime lens, such the 50mm prime. Perhaps flogging the Sigma to CEX who offered me £65 cash is a start!

DH which wide-angle attachment are you referring to?

That was the 467, mine is the 465, IIRC yours has a laptop compartment? I think thats the only difference. TBH I only bought it as you recommended the 467.

So. Impressed.  (except my tripod wont fit on the side)

Yeah mine has the laptop compartment, just today i was using the bag and found another compartment! Don't think I'll outgrow this for a while. Also you can buy a trolley for it to be mounted on, if you're real lazy!

Just got £65 cash from CEX for my faulty (but free) Sigma 28-300mm lens  :lipsrsealed:

They only checked the front lens; they didn't even remove the rear lens cap, so didn't spot the growth inside the lens (amateurs!)

Time for a 50mm prime

That's a fair bit of expenditure for the wife not to notice at least the money going out, even if she doesn't notice the model badge on the camera change from 80 to 300!
Nice work though.

yes i have over spent a bit ,she didn't notice when it changed from a silver canon d300 to the black nikon d80 so i ain't too concerned and she doesn't watch what i spend so no need to worry there
