Hi guys just recently had my MOT few things needed doing which on a mk2 golf is to be expected,
but the the thing that has got me is one of the reasons is:
Exhaust noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition
its a powerflow exhaust fitted was on there when i brought the car, it was my local powerflow garage who did the mot, which i thins is strange that they fail there own exhausts
had a quick google and i cant see much on exhaust noise only on the exhaust has to be gas tight no leaks
is this something i should descuss with the mot centre? or should i just change the backbox
-
Is it just a backbox or is it a full system? If its just a backbox and you've no straight through sections I'd be tempted to ask another mot place (the smaller the better) for their opinion on your pipe and get them to test it if they don't have a problem.

Have you a middle box fitted.

Have you a middle box fitted.
I have a box missing on my vr6 and thats not excessive.
TBH i'd take it up with the garage, if they wont budge take it elsewhere!

+1. On my old system it had just a small backbox, that was seriously loud and I never had any problems with anything. As far as I know MOT testing doesn't include noise as they don't have decibel readers so it shouldn't be a fail...

nope they can still fail it for what they deem as "excessive noise"
my first car (Fiesta mk1 1.1!) failed for the same reason. that had nothing but 1 (yes only 1) cherry bomb straight through muffler... and that was noisy!

As above, it is part of the test.

a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition.

it looks like just the backbox to me, i spoke to the mot place he said its to loud to pass he suggested i put on a standard backbox to pass the mot then i can do what i like once its passed
so i have got myself a standard backbox comming just a cheap and nasty one about £30 im hopeing that i wont have to get any mods done to fit standard box :)
it seams stupid how one place will pass it and another wont even though they dont use DBmeters
-
I think it's unreasonable leaving it up to the tester to pass by ear. While one tester could have sharp hearing another could be deaf as a snake.
-
think it's much more dependant on the tester giveing a sh!t.
i picked one up from MOT today with only 1 singel straight through box, tester thought it sounded nice
-
think its stupid a company failing mot on their own exhausts.. it will put people off getting one made by them if it makes the car non road worthy.. and in essence illegal to fit ??
-
Sounds a like a absolute twit too me, have you pointed out its a powerflow exhaust? Should of just taken it somewhere to else to get mot'd when he said that, not go and swap the exhaust over.
-
sounds like they just want your money to me have had a few freinds of mine get powerflow exhausts and love them i personaly hate them.
would point out to them thats its a powerflow and see what they say and if they decide to be dicks about it just take it some ware else if you have the funds to that is

Was there an inspector there?
MOT stations go ANAL when inspectors are near.
