Title: Does any body know the location of the VIN plate on a ?R? reg Gti 8v?

Does any body know the location of the VIN plate on a ?R? reg? Gti 8v? Because today I found a mint Gti I wanted to buy but all I could find was 2 rivet holes front left hand side were I expected the VIN plate to be, but half way up on the right hand side there was a black strip with the VIN number on it and weight etc is this the VIN plate?
