So had a few more things to change mainly the dizzy and rotar arm and ignition leads
So replaced them all and then when i went to start the car nothing then a bit of a pop so im assuming that's a misfire and a spark pluh has gone? would this be down to putting the ignition leads on in the wrong order?
-
Sounds like it... Could also be that you have put the Dist cap on wrong...
Get the haynes manual out!!

ok ill have a look at the haynes, when i looked at the new and old dizzy cat they looked exactly the same
failing that is there anyway to remedy this? :(
-
just had a read through the haynes and the only thing i can think of is that the HT leads are connected in the wrong bloody firing order
so after a quick search if read that the order is 1342
now on the dizzy which one way does it go? and which lead is 1 is it the one closest the oil cap :embarassed:
-
Easy mistake to make fella. I always number my leads (Blobs of tippex,1 on ead 1, 2 blobs on lead 2 etc) and then change one lead at a time and then change the dizzy cap.
Anyhoo Haynes should tell you how to do it but it's quite simple.
Take out spark plug 1 (Nearest the airbox) And stick a chopstick down the hole. Rock the car back forth in 1st gear by pulling on the slam panel until the chopstick reaches the highest point. You've now roughly found Top Dead Centre for Number 1 cyclinder. Pop the dizzy cap off and you should see the rotor arm will be roughly pointing at one of the leads. That lead should be connected to plug number one. You then have a starting point to work out the rest of the leads :o)

cheers guys well ive managed to sort the HT lead order our and got the car started
But
it doesn't sound to healthy a bit lump and tbh i don't really want to drive it ive taken a video ill try and post up in a bit see what you guys think, and i right in thinking that that first attempted when i heard the loud pop/bang was a spark plug saying bye bye
-
prob just a back fire... but take them out and check them...

i havent got a spark plug tool :( or is it just a specific wrnech and extention?
dont know if it was just me but there was a strong smell of fuel at the back of the car, would this be due to it misfiring?
-
thats cos the pistons are full of fuel thats not e getting ignited in the correct order...
There's no point putting new leads on and not fitting new plugs... get a tool and new plugs fitted..
-
Sounds the like the order could still be a bit wrong TBH. Either that or you've knocked the timing out a tad.
You need a proper Spark Plug socket to get the plugs out. You wont have killed a plug from getting the order wrong.

Me and most people I know just use a long reach socket and if it don't pull the plug out push the ht lead on it and pull it out
-
For stink I think a proper socket would be best, he's a bit accident prone and I have images of a broken a plug stuck down the whole.

if the timing has been knocked out is that a bit of a ball ache for a novice like me to sort?

I think i would prefer a proper tool as you mention i just manage to break anythign i bloody touch! All part of the learning curve i guess :embarassed:

did you put em on 1 3 4 2 anticlockwise? if not, easy mistake to make. did same on our polo!

well i put them on clockwise, is it anticlock wise?
-
yep its anticlockwise on a 16v, nd 1.0-1.3 as dizzy is on side o head it spins opposite way to 1.6/1.8 8v :)
-
so if your looking at righthand side of engine what order should they look in
1 2
3 4
like that

so just to confirm( as is sounds like i still have 2 leads on wrong )
this is how it should look? or one more to the left?

anyone? :undecided:

looking at it you need to move #1 where #3 is on your diagram. to confirm 100% rotate engine till cam is at TDC and put lead #1 where the rotor arm is pointing. there is a notch on the dizzy housing as well, this should be where the rotor arm is pointing at tdc so start there. even if not, just move em all round 1 notch at a time till the car runs right, only 1 of 4 combos it can be :P
for reference, this is how the dizzy on my 16v was set, you can see the notch where lead #1 needs to be fitted:
