Hey, just bought a MK4 99 GTTDI today and after a test drive I noticed the gear stick a little sticky, especially getting into 3rd gear. I purchased the car (at a good price) and took it home. A friend of a friend who is a mechanic, took a drive and straight away said that I would need a new gear box. I figured I can work with the sticky gears and I have got the knack for working with it so I wouldn't change it until it became too bad or it gave up on me.
I read a few threads online - to do with adjusting selector cables etc, and suggested it to him, but he dismissed all and just said it needed a new gear box, period. I was wondering if the existing gear box needed something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp9ggefOjAE done (although that is not for '99 MK4's) or was he right in his diagnosis.
I suppose I just forked out for a new car, the last thing I want to do is fork out more for a new gearbox!
Also, just to add, I tried the gear changes when the engine was off, and no stickiness at all (or very little compared to when driving). Could this suggest anything?

Could be worth a gearbox oil change just to make sure its not old fluid?
-
As I say, complete noob! Could give it a go, but Is this easy done myself or would I need a mechanic to look at it?
Also, any idea what kind of oil to use? I heard its pretty specific (from this http:// www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/?t=41812 (http:// www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/?t=41812)thread.

Only sticky when cold? Gets alot easyier to change gear when its warm? If so mine the same on my 99 1.8t

Try and get the gearbox oil right the first time if going DIY, I thought I'd be clever and user a wider band viscosity oil on mine, it did the job but gear changes where so stiff when cold. Not sure what the oil needed is on a derv. Its not an expensive job at the mechanics either mine charged me about £20 with oil or around there.

Drain and replace the oil, easy enough to sort.

Opposite, when the engine was off they were no problem, even when the engine is on and cold it's sticky, don't know if there's much difference whether it's hot or cold, just very temperamental.

Sounds more like the clutch at fault if its fine when engines off

Have the exact same problem.Doesnt feel like clutch.Mines a 1.8t had the vr6clutch and g60 flywheel done 18months ago.It all depends how you change gear and doesnt happen all the time.Mines always 1st and 3rd.As you said no problems stationary.Just seem like an allignment thing.Let me know if you get yours sorted and i will if i get mine..cheers jay

3rd gives me the most problems, I have to knock it a little shade to the right when I'm putting it into gear, and its position is almost exactly where 5th is (sometimes if I'm trying to go into 5th I knock it into 3rd without noticing).
Also there is sometimes, in the low gears, a knock after I put it into gear and let the clutch out, along with a slight rattle when the clutch is in! I hope I don't need a gear box, fly wheel, or clutch change, so hopefully I can get these little problems sorted one by one.

The rattle sounds like the clutch release bearing tbh.

Fill me in, is it easily fixed?

wouldnt be rattling when clutch is depressed tho, thats when he hears it.
starting to sound more and more like the clutch to me

Recently got My mk4 on the road over the weekend!Anyhows i remember the gearbox being a bit nochey in first like if you depressed the clutch and and stuffed it in first fast you get a sligth crunch or stiff to engage, when warm sligthly better.Had the gearbox oil changed but doesn't seem much better from what I remember driver it 5-6 years ago.All the other gears are perfect!
Anyhows its a 99 AGU if that helps.
If yours are certain gears then I belive the problem would be with the gearbox not the clutch? If it where a clutch problem woudln't you have a problem with all the gears?

Is there any other tests to check out the clutch? I read somewhere to test the clutch, depress it, let my foot slip off so that it springs back by itself, and if it comes back with some resistance then I have a problem (maybe something compleltely unrelated though).
I did this without any signs of resistance.

Good point, learning learning learning here! I'll try and get a oil change this week (the previous owner told me he didn't have one in the two years he owned the car) so hopefully it helps solve the sticky gear change.
With more investigation, when I am sitting at the lights in neutral and I go through the gears, they go in and out no problem, it's only when the car is moving. Would this suggest anything?
Yeah, also theres a slight rattle when I'm coming to a stop as well, like when I'm at traffic lights, going down through the gears etc, which could be the clutch. Investigating all of this now.

Yes sounds like your clutch is in trouble.

What are we talking for a clutch replacement, does £100 parts and £100 labour sound right? Am I better getting this sooner rather than later?
Also can this bearing just be replaced/tightened?
Also reading about fly wheels, is it possible I need this replacing?
Thanks for the help btw.

Latest: found out a guy I play football with owns his own VW garage with his dad, he had a drive, going through the low gears. He said it was fine but mentioned something about maybe getting a wishbone replaced on the passenger side, and getting the gears realigned (I mentioned the youtube video). He said it was a great deal I got, so I'm very happy!! Maybe its just me getting used to a diesel from having a petrol for so long!

On further inspection, it actually 'knocks/clunks' when I press down / release the accelerator pedal. Hopefully that sheds some light to someone somewhere!

Could be a engine mount has failed which could in a roundabout way affect your gear change.

Where abouts are you located dude?I'm sure people on here could recommend 101 half decent VW mech's locally. They shouldn't charge you much just to diagnose the problem and tell you if it will be £100 or £500 then you can decide to go ahead with any repairs.

I'm in Belfast. Just had a quick search through the forums there, and this thread http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/346996/2357515.aspx, seems to be relevant to my interests!
