I have a 1990 golf GTi 8v recently got a knocking that sounds like its coming from the rear NS Only knocks on occasions ie setting off, the odd bumpe etc.. I have checked the exhaust, shockers etc nothing obvious there..any other ideas please? I also have the music louder than usual.. (temp measure!)
Thanks. Frustrated... ??? ???

Hello,
When you checked your exhaust, did you jack up the car?
As you jack the car up the rear beam moves away from the exhaust, so try at floor level, whilst moving the car up and down. (simulated road)
Please dont get squashed!
Hope this is of help. :)

The more weight i get in the car the worse the nosie gets only when i put the foot down, when im on my own its fine, i can never hear the banging.
I wonder if its the exhaust? any adea's :)
Cheers

Check for worn top mounts on your suspenion, this can cause a knocking sound.

Yep sounds right, it can also be the plastic sleeve on the shock absorber, they do come off and knock against the shock.

Have you checked your ball joints ;)

I think old boy has hit the nail on the head, its the exhaust, as it heats up it with probably either move away from something or get closer to it, mine used to have the same problem but only with someone in the back, I found it was one of the rear exhaust hangers had come adrift and so the box was being pulled to one side. And I wouldn't mind some of that balljoint on the rear stuff as It sounds like good sh*t.
