Rite guys i currently own a 1.8t mk4,
Im fancying a change and have always liked the mk2 since a kid!
Jst wanting to kno about reliabilaty mpg and day to day driveing!
So any advice would b great!
-
depends what model form the mk2 range mate..
-
GTis will be about 35mpg, can get over 40mpg with the 8v apparently. take a bit to look after as they are old cars, buy on body condition, mechanicals are cheap to buy and easy too fit.
They are brilliant to drive  Try and find a sorted one already, 2l 16v on sorted chassis.
-
Want a gti!
Dont realy kno wat to look for!
i know the mk4 gti's came withe few diffrent engines is this the same case with the mk2's?
-
8v and 16v.. kjet and digi.. oh and G60
get an 8v digi or a 2l 16v ABF.. mine was a 8v digi and was great im now fitting a 2l 16v from a mk3 golf so should be more reliable as newer and more power 150bhp out the box..
-
GTI's are 8v and 16v, 8v's slower but more of a daily drive with low down grunt, the 1.8 needs revving past 4000rpm to get its 140bhp. Easily solved by getting a 2.0l engine ( ABF code from mk3 gti 16v or 9A 2.0l 16v) as these have plenty low down torque for normal driving then even more when revved  Was your mk4 gti mapped? If not then the 2.0l and the 1.8 16v will feel much faster!
-
no aint mapped mine!
as its the 1.8t its quite thirsty even when driven gently! :embarassed:
Will need it to be used as a daily driver but want something with a bit of poke for when the mood strikes! haha
-
yer they are sh!t on fuel, bout 30mpg my one used to get me! Get a 2.0l 16v one mate will feel fast as F compared to the mk4 and the handling. I dont often take mine past 4000rpm only when I'm in the mood and it still feels fast going from 2.5k to 4k. It may take longer to find but a clean example should really be cheaper then an original clean 1.8 gti. Like I said buy on the body, I made this mistake now I'm paying for it lol.
-
for a 2l 16v one you are looking really at 2k+ tbh tho..
-
Yer around 2k I'd say, got my 2.0l with suspension for 2.1k but with rust  perfect 1.8 gti's are up for around 3k lol
-
i was just looking mate.. once mines up and running and after respray should be worth a few bob
-
Hmmm want to try and stay under 2k if i can as i dont think id get that for my mk4. (only paid £1500 for it)
Any body wana buy a the mk4 gti and a gen7 celica vvti sitting on my drive?
-
your trying to sell a mk4 in the mk2 section
-
never know there mite be somebody wanting to do the oposite to me!
-
Not likely haha, you could still find a 2.0l for around 2k mate, just takes time to look and wait for the right one. I was picky, it had to be black or atlas grey 3 door and 2.0l went for the oak green in the end which I love!
-
Im not too picky about colours and stuff like that!
The mk4 is a nice car but i just dont feel like im geting the full gti experience!
So am i right in thinking il need to look for a 2L? or a 1.8?
Is there any diffrence in the Spec depending on the year?
Also do the mk2's run on carb or injection?
-
get 90 spec.. mine is 90 spec.. only thing i dont have is elec windows..
-
What is the diffrence in power beetween the 2L and the 1.8?
seen a few on ebay, some have chavy halfrauds bits on them!
-
between the 2 16v's ??
-
Well between the 16v and the 8v.
-
i think 8v 110bhp and the 16v 140bhp.. and the 2l 16v with EFI is 150 bhp
-
Buy a 90 spec 16V. The 16V is an awesome drive.
Also, if you have the 90 spec you can do an easy upgrade to a 2.0 ABF (150 BHP ) from the MK3 as the electrics are similar.
90 spec's are identified by having the hazard switch on the steering column. Pre 90's have a switch on the dash.
As said, buy on body quality as most mechanicals are easily changed.
8v is 115 BHP
16v is 139 BHP
-
150bhp? now we are talking!
Same power as my mk4 and not haveing the turbo must make it better on fuel?
What are they like to insure? My mk4 is stupidly expensive!
-
i found my mk2 just as expensive to insure tbh but i dont have it on a specialist policy..
-
Well....seing as the Mk2 is Older and cheaper I would guess less to insure.
I'm 34 and pay about £260 a year.
-
older doesnt mean less.. it would cost a bomb for me to be insured on a old porsche if it didnt i would drive one lol
-
More mate. mk4 1.8t are gay 2.016v arent. was £300 more for me than the 1.8t lol thats the 180bhp variant inall!
-
I think you will also find that these older cars do more damage to new cars, people (Should you Hit one) due to them being so well built and this in turn pushes up the insurance costs...
-
 think gonna have to just find a mk2 and get a quote as im paying £1100 on the mk4
23 years old 3 points 3years ncb.
-
Probs be about £1200. I was 19 paying £1400, have a look on classic insurance.
