Morning all
Am I right in saying when using a trolley jack there are 4 points to jack up on sort of circular shape?
Also should u put a flat block of wood between the jack and the jacking point?
Not wanting to put a hole thru my floors
-
Personally I wouldnt use the jacking points anymore, just for tempting fate!
Under the front, jack under the plate that secures the anti roll bar (10 inch inboard of the front jacking point) And on the rear, jack under the axle mounting, just in front of the rear wheel, use a wooden block only if your confident, that it in no way can slip
And use axle stands!

Thanks Thom
-
I agree with Thom - I have one that started to disappear into the bodywork. Even though it is all welded up now I still don't trust it. There are other strong points as Thom suggests.
-
Its criminal to jack on any bit that has underseal!
Rear axel or front subframe for me. Never had an issue with those areas. A bent axel is very rare.
-
Don't do it!! No underseal sub frame and even wishbones are a good jacking point.
-
Also agree! After spending a substantial amount of dosh having the jacking points repaired properly ie cut out and replaced, they are now defiantly strong enough to use but still I'll never jack the car up on them again!
-
i nearly always use my jacking points. :embarassed:
not heard any crunching yet though
-
you say you had them all welded up i need one maybe 2 of my front ones done how much did you get charged to have this fixed ??
-
Picture says it all really.

It cost me the best part of £400 labour BUT! as i said i didnot just have them repaired i had the whole section cut out so there was no rust then i had the same section cut out of another mk2 with perfect jacking points then had that welded in and the seals rebuilt, its such a good job that they are now stonger than ever and also it looks oe which is what i wanted, not the cheapest or easiest way of sorting it out but i am abit anal when it come to my mk2
-
It ended up looking like this before it was undersealed and now its all dirty it looks spot on.

who did you get to do that? i made the same mistake of loosing a jack point :(
-
is that a repair panel or ??
-
the panel and work?
-
In the pic thats a bit chopped off another mk2 he said. Dads mate came round and dint seem to fussed bout it, so doubt itll cost that much to fix
-
I've always used my proper jacking points - but that said, mine aint a rotbox :D
Rear beam, mid-chassis legs, front chassis legs, front subframe > body section are my supports of choice.
I put them wherever they're not in the way. Chassis legs are structural points - so anywhere on it is fine.
For the front, normally I go for the very front chassis leg where it meets the front x-member - jacking from the rear subframe/front x-member.

For the front, then I jack from the jacking points and support under the chassis leg at the middle/front.

For the rear, if I'm not working on the rear beam, then I support from the rear beam and jack from it.

For the rear, if I'm working on the rear beam, I jack from it and support on the rear mount points (not a great photo, don't have any others).

the Phirm did the welding work and it's not a repair panel it is a section cut out of another mk2 that was being broken

If you want to do the whole quarter then get it from here http://www.vwh2o.com/vw.cfm?parts=Chassis-Repair-Panels&act=page.render&pageID=756&lang=EN&country=GB

And the very best of luck on fitting one of those!

How come?
-
I fitted one a few weeks back, the panel was a complete joke! in the end, I used only the wheel arch, and lower section, and joined just below the body side moulding,
Thom
-
Ahh right, good to know, I wont be using it then!
-
I'll try and find a pic later...
Thom
-
That'd be useful thanks.

Here we go, study the pic carefully, and you'll see that the sill section is miles out of shape, as is the window aperture, all swage lines are not pressed crisply enough, and the panel would fold in half! if lifted off the floor, holding the uppermost part of the arch! Anyone attempting to fit one of these, should only use the wheel arch, and sill section as far up as the 2nd swage, and discard the rest!
Big Boys Toys do an awesome job in supplying hard to find parts, so I'm not blaming them, though it might be worth them having a word with the supplying manufacturer to raise the quality of this important pressing. the upside of this, is that the steel was very good quality, and welded superbly, and given plenty of time, could be made to fit, I now have one very happy customer

Cheers mate, guessing the floor plan will be just as badly manufactured then. :undecided:
-
I cant answer that, as I've not fitted any floorpan panels for a fair few years, but like any pattern panels, they have to be made to fit, luckily appearance of a floorpan is not as crucial as a quarter panel..
