Hi all,
After a while away from the VW scene, I've decided to get myself another Mk2 Golf. The trouble is I have lost touch with market values etc.
I used to own a '91 8V GTi which had 40k on the clock when I bought it. It was a "one mature owner" vehicle, and was absolutely mint. This is good for me now that I'm looking again, as I know what a nice tight Mk2 should feel like.
My questions for the experts are:
What would I expect to pay for a standard/non modified, vgc, 90-92, 3dr, 16Valver, with no more than 100k gen milage and a VAGFSH ? I am seeing them advertised anywhere between 1000 - 2500 at the minute, so thats quite a spread. Obviously condition varies the price, but whilst I am enthusiastic about the GTi, I don't want to spend my life under the bonnet, so a vgc example that really just requires regular servicing and necessary maintenance would be what I'm after.
Whast would you guys be willing to stump up for such a motor?

all 16vs are thrashed, whether they are 50k or 150k. buy one you like the look of and if your serious, shove just a grand away for an engine rebuild.
i'd be more concerned about whether the car is straight than a fsh. far too many 16vs have had frontal damage. a lower value thrashed 16v is in my opinion better than a smacked "mint" 16v. the problem with16vs in particular is that any smack they had was not at parking speeds. nature of the beast.

yeah and the engines are relatively easy to sort out, i would look for good bodywork above all, and obviously do check then engine over tho! i wouldnt pay more than 2000 for a late plate 16v, and for that i would want electrics, good bodywork and as much history as possible and between 90 - 120k miles tops

as said above - u just need to hunt around - there is still good ones tucked away!! and can be bought for v.little money!
again, as said all 16vs have been thrashed!! but the engine is bullet proof!! usually a badly thrashed 16v will have went thru at least one gearbox so a good check is to make sure it still has the 2y box. if it dont then u wanna know why
also, service history aint a biggy i dont think. id rather buy a 16v that has bucket loads of recepits for work done over the last two years than one which had service history up until about 2year ago!
and HPI it before you buy it
most important thing is that bodywork that is the killer. everything else can be fixed v.cheaply!!

Eh, stoopid question comin up: Whats the 2y box? I'm assuming thats the original gearbox. What if it's been reconditioned, not so easy to spot?
I'm scouring the ads, some people are asking BIG money i.e. 3k plus for a late 16V with over 150k on the clock. What about these good ones tucked away for v. little money :sad: I might just buy an 8 valve to whet my appetite while I look.
Any comments on the TSR modded engines? Recommended or not? What about insurance, does it go through the roof. How does a 8V TSR compare with a 16V standard.
Ahh, so much to learn, so few mint 16valvers to find....... :smiley:

yeah the 2y box is the standard 16v gearbox. it is stamped on the bottom of the bellhousing
if its been reconditioned then you more than likely gettin a 16v that has been loved. most people just bung in a 8v box and be done with it!! recon boxes are expensive!
dont much on the TSR engines as ive never had one nor known anybody who has - things like that in N.Ireland are few & far between!!
as for where to look - well i got mine in the Isle of Man of all places!!
