Title: Continuous Cooling Fan
Post by: steamvalve on 11 March 2005, 17:51
Apologies for intruding - but I don't have a Golf GTI.
I own a Bora and would appreciate some advice (apart from go away and buy a Golf Gti)
It's a 1999 2.0 Petrol - I assume this is the same as a 2.0 Petrol Golf GTi engine.
When I turn off the ignition the radiator cooling fan continues running forever until the battery runs out.
It will then only start with a set of jump leads. This even happens if it's not hot i.e. running for 5 mins.
A local garage (not VW) said it's probably the air con playing up.? If so, I guess it's gonna be an expensive fix.? I have found a green fuse on top of the battery - the far left one, that stops the fan. Which means I have to take it out every time I stop the car!

Has this happened to anyone else? Is this something I can fix myself or is it a main dealer problem? ??????????????? :undecided:

Welcome to the forum, and don't worry Boras are cool, especially when kitted up by oettinger and slammed on 19's

I'm pretty sure what you're experiencing is a fairly common (and im afraid not cheap when out of warranty) problem. Use the search function at the top of the page, go to advanced search and click the box for mk4 section only, and do some searches for things like "air con fans" "fan fault" etc and you'll see the people in the past that had this problem and how they solved it.

Hello there

a lot of the tdi owners (myself included) had a fault where the fans would either not work at all, stay on or intermittently come on. this was a fault traced to a set of faulty fans and i got mine fixed under warranty- only difference in my case was it kept blowing fuses. As your is sort of experiencing similar faults it might be the same problem.

if you have a vagcom lead plug that in and see if it gives you an error code. If you don't, skate over to ukmkivs and see if there is someone in your area with one.

hope this helps and good luck

I`ve seen relays stick on on other VW models. This is a big black unit in the engine bay that controls the fans for air con and cooling.Trace the wires back from the fans should lead to the relay if fitted. This fault won`t show up on VAS.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately it has been diagnosed at VW main dealers as a problem with the "air conditioning controller unit"?
Only ?211.00 - bargain!?*
I've told them to go ahead with it, it's gotta be fixed at the end of the day.
