Title: 8v Front bushes.... Help.
Post by: javalin on 05 March 2011, 18:42
Hiya

OK - so I have the full set of front bushes, fitted the anti-rollbar two, working on the wishbone set, now have link bushes, power steering rack mounting and subframe mounts left over.  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-MK3-8v-Front-Bushes-Polyurethane-/280631103942?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4156ead1c6 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-MK3-8v-Front-Bushes-Polyurethane-/280631103942?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4156ead1c6)

Can anybody advise what link bushes are, how hard and whats involved with the PS rack and where and how hard are the subframe mounts?

Been working on it for 7 hours today - stubborn ball joint on n/s/f wheel took quite a few hours - I've not been this sore for ages! :-(

Cheers,

james

ah, think I've sussed it - they are the anti-roll-bar links if you don't have a GTI (cause the're different!)

Cool.

can't say from experience (yet) - but its supposed to stiffen up the front end handling - reduce suspension movement etc.

Changed mine as the current (VW) ones have done 92k miles and are shot - car is like driving the playbus....

Can be a pig of a job though.

nah - taken me all weekend - 15hours or so - depends how smooth it goes I guess.  N/S/F ball joint was stuck.

Still a minor steering repair to do - sounds like i've popped a universal joint and to grind the gides off the subframe - didn't do both sides.

Another 7 hour day Tuesday me thinks...

just to update - handling is now amazingly better - my old bushes/ball joints were screwed.  No alignment done yet due to seized tie-rod ends, VW want £600 (yes thats two zero's!!!!!) so some more work for me (£53 for parts delivered).   So I guess it depends on the state of your current bushes.

Mine also needed new fronts, worn bushes = inner and outer's bald!!

As to the difficulty of the job - nowhere near as bad as I thought - just me being a total muppet.  See my blog (http://javalins.wordpress.com/ (http://javalins.wordpress.com/)) for updates and my thoughts on the DIY from Dan Reed (which is good btw).
