Title: sunroof rubber
Post by: Reasty on 05 March 2011, 17:13
Evenin!

I'm in need of a bit of advice, just bought a new sunroof rubber for the mk2 (the felt one you see from outside the car) from gpc.
After having a look it would seem you have to remove the sunroof in order to replace the rubber seal, how do you do this and am I likely to run into any problems?,the roofs not leaking but the seal is all perished and looks crappy so want to replace it

Cheers!

It's in the Haynes manual, but basically whilst inside the car partly open the roof, prise off the trim panel and push it to the rear to expose the sunroof panel mounting screws and spring clips, and whip the lot off.

Lift the sunroof panel away carefully as there's a water trap fitted to the back end of it that you cannot see until it's out of the car.

When you fit the new seal, try not to pull too much tension into it, if the seal contracts after fitting, it may leave a gap!
To cut the seal, side cutters are only OK, but will crush the metal within the seal! the very best way to get a perfect joint is to bind the seal in masking tape, mark the length you want, and cut in one go, with a rotary cut off wheel, like this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3GnLIJn0Og

Also when winding it back in the first time make sure the sunroof panel is sat all the way down, or you may scratch the hell out of it against the roof.

Reasty where did you get your seal from?

Am I right in thinking theres an outer seal and an inner seal? My sunroof leaks with heavy rain and although the outer seal is knackered I'm not sure its 100% to blame. I suppose the other thing is blocked drain holes?
