Title: still rattling

Hi i have posted about my rattle before a while ago but im still lost. i rebuilt my mk2 16v engine but ever since it seems to have this rattle. it did sound (to me ) like it was coming from the top end but not lifters. anyway i gave up last time and left it. now i have decided it is well over due for fixing so i got my local garage to listen to it and he said it sounds like main bearings i have pulled the mains and they are all as new as it has never been driven since i rebuilt it so i cleaned the oil strainer checked the pump and put it all back and guess what still the same. do you think it could be that the cam bearings are shot in the head? i need to get this sorted as i have spent far too much to give up on it. thanks in advance

Did you replace the cam chain?

i didnt but it sounds deeper than that (Sound wise) if that makes any sence

I would try a new cam chain, if it does not cure it then you need to look deeper.
